Star Trek Concordance -- New Artwork Needed!

Captain Robert April

Vice Admiral

As I said in the other thread, we're gonna need some new artwork to go in the new edition, specifically, pictures relating to Enterprise, and, against my better judgment, JJ's movie.

This is your chance to be a part of the new edition, folks!

The artwork will, of course, need to be approved by Bjo. The only question at the moment is whether you'll have to send the pieces to her via snail mail or if email submissions will be permitted (not going to be discussed for a while anyway, as she has family business to take care of, plus I need to find out if the data on the old 3.5 discs is salvageable or we have to retype this puppy from scratch).

I think I am safe in saying that we're gonna need black & white, photoready artwork (if this goes the hardcopy route, we'll need to keep the production costs down). Either you'll have to mail in clean photocopies (no originals, please; we don't need that aggravation), or email fairly big scans. That'll be finalized later.

For now, get drawing, guys. Your chance at fannish glory awaits!

i was working on a drawing with the Kelvin in Drydock on Earth...It had real potential if I could design the Dry dock around it properly...what the dead line like?

Hmm...

An interesting oppertunity. I always looked at the Fan Art section of the original book and thought, dang, I wish I could publish my drawings! I'll see what i can put together.

Actually let's talk about subject matter. Are we dealing with illustrations of the stories that tie into the original series characters? Including cross over stuff from TNG, et cetera? I assume the 'Enterprise' you mention is the abortive Scott Bakula vehicle right? In fan conjecture (like the old drawing of the Antares) fair game, or just stuff from the show?

--Alex

I think that drawing of the Antares may be out, now that the Antares has been established as being a TAS style freighter, but that's Bjo's call, not mine. In fact, I suspect there'll be some other issues like that, thanks to TOS-R.

For the time being, though, just worry about doing some good stuff. Not every drawing has to be TOS related (only the text has to meet that standard). The last version had pictures of just spinoff subjects, and there's no reason to believe this version will be any different (especially since we'll be reusing a lot of that artwork, plus a lot that Bjo approved that the idiot publisher didn't include).

Now, if you're depicting a scene from a story, yeah, it'll certainly help your chances if it's from a story that'll be included, but for the most part, don't worry about it. If it's good enough, we'll either find a way to use it, or ask you to make the changes necessary for us to use it. I had a few pics that took a second attempt to get right.

So, to summarize, we're gonna need art from all of the series, including TAS, all of the TOS movies, Generations, First Contact, and JJ's movie. I'd keep the speculative stuff to a minimum. I had a really spiffy phaser rifle design that Bjo was rather excited about, but couldn't justify using it. Still not sure how that Antares pic made it, but again, Bjo's call, not mine.

Go forth and create!

Oh, I see. You said "artwork from all the series", and since each series has more of its own content than TOS crossover content, I figured everything was fair game.

Howzabout this: Nothing that exclusively belongs to one of those stories that has no TOS connection. A picture of Data or Janeway is fine. A picture of Thadiun Okona isn't, as much as we may like the character.

To get into specifics, I offer up this from the thread I started over in Trek Lit...

Just checked my copy of the '95 version, and the TNG section only goes up as far as "Relics", the only DS9 episode is "Blood Oath". No Voyager.

We've got a lot of stuff to update.

For TNG, we still need "Rightful Heir" (I suspect its omission was a simple oversight).

For DS9, we need "Crossover" (at least a mention, since it relates directly to actions begun in "Mirror, Mirror", complete with a direct reference to Kirk and Spock), "The Sword of Kahless", "Trials And Tribble-ations", and "Once More Unto the Breach".

For Voyager, "Flashback" and maybe a mention of "Q2" for its mention of Kirk's five year mission, and whenever the hologram of Leonardo da Vinci shows up ("Requiem For Methuselah").

For Enterprise, "Broken Bow", "Fight or Flight" (the appearance of the Axanar, first mentioned in "Court Martial" and "Whom Gods Destroy"), "Catwalk" (T'Pol mentions undergoing the kahs-wan ritual), "Future Tense" (the speculation that they might have found the remains of Zefrem Cochrane), "Judgment" (the scenes on Rura Penthe), "The Forge", "Awakening", and "Kir'Shara" (all those appearances by T'Pau and Surak), maybe "Affliction" and "Divergence", for the origin of the non-ridged Klingons, and "In a Mirror, Darkly".

And then, there's JJ's movie.

From there, the list gets pruned, if necessary, by Bjo.

One problem I noticed in the '95 version today is the lexicon being divided into three columns. Makes it rather awkward to read, and it definitely plays hell with the picture placement.

Got the discs with the text last night. The reports of a computer virus appear to have been greatly exaggerated, but the text itself looks like someone fed the Concordance through a wood chipper; sections are scattered all over the place.

Good thing I like jigsaw puzzles...

Regarding new artwork, yes, Virginia, Bjo is accepting submissions now. Just send a clean, clear photocopy of your masterpiece (NO ORIGINALS!!) to:

Bjo Trimble
174 W. Foothill Blvd #343
Monrovia, Ca 91016

Put something on the envelope to indicate that it's for the Concordance.

Again, NO ORIGINAL PIECES! Black and white photocopies, please. We don't need somebody's fan art masterpiece being lost or mangled by our intrepid postal service.

At the moment, we need generic pieces from all of the series and the first eight movies. You can probably make a good guess at which episodes are gonna make the cut, so go ahead and plow ahead with those too, if you so wish. When we've got a better idea of specific subjects we need, we'll put out a call for specific pieces.

And, as usual, we can't pay you for your art, aside from a free copy of the book when it comes out. Consider it a resume enhancer, as well as another notch in one's fan cred. :D

Question...

Will she want to use art that hasn't been used/displayed before? In other words, if I have drawn a picture I mean to submit to Bjo, can I also show it here? Or should I just hold off till I hear from her whether or not it's usable?

Cause, I do have such a drawing.

--Alex

Go ahead and send it to her, since she'll be selecting the artwork, and she doesn't post here anyway.

Personally, I'd be a little leery of posting prospective artwork here, just on general principles, but that's just my gut feeling.

Yeah, me too. I was half way through posting it when I thought, "Hey, is this a stupid thing to do?" So I'm glad I asked to confirm, that yeah, that'd be pretty dumb.

Thanks.
