Star Trek: Coldspace (TOS Remake)

A few years ago, I posted some ideas on remaking TOS. My ideas have begun to come together, and I have started writing my 'TOS remake' which I am calling "Star Trek: Coldspace" (the title will become evident later in the series.) Anyone who remembers my original story will see some major changes, particularlly in Chapter Three that will effect the way the tale unfolds (as opposed to the previous incarnation). In essence, this is a Trek reboot, set in the 29th century, that is striving to be more of a serious take on interstellar exploration.

"We are leaving that vast cloud of stars and planets which we call our galaxy. Behind us, Earth, Mars, the Sun, even our colony worlds, are specks of dust. The question: What is out there in the black void beyond? Until now, our mission has been that of space law regulation, contact with our colonies, and investigation of alien life. But now, a new task: A probe, out to the edge of known space, and into the vast unknown beyond – where no man has gone before."

The prologue, and first three chapters can be viewed at: http://startrekcoldspace.blogspot.com

Since Blogger lists posts in most-recent first order, I have placed a link at the top of the 'current' chapter to direct you to each previous chapter. (Best I can think of using this format.)

Enjoy!

Interesting contrast you have-Married Priest and Sci-fi fan. Must make for some interesting and convoluted explanations of your faith.

Indeed. God is a computer on the planet Clackamas VII, and he is hungry at the moment for a double with fries and a shake ;)

In all seriousness, not really. Science Fiction is interesting and inspiring in many ways, but it is fiction. (I realize some here believe that God is fiction, I don't. Let's not have that discussion in this thread. I'd much rather hear about how much you hate my writing...)

Man, God doesn't live where anywhere near Crack-of-my-Ass!

Interesting premise, lead on, MacDuff!

I recall your previous take on this and liked it quite a lot (I remember particularly liking your ideas about the transition from warp space/subspace to normal space, among other things). I'll look forward to seeing how you've reimagined your reimagining. ;)

Oh, and to Gibraltar: droll my friend, very droll.

(Always good to meet a fellow believer and sci-fi fan! :) )

I am really liking your basic concept and historical backstory--the way you pushed the Trek era further into the future where it could be easily reconciled with our current timeline. And I especially liked the idea that things didn't necessarily become all rosy on Earth the instant humanity took to the stars.

One thing that surprised me from a character standpoint...and pardon me for being a latecomer to your fiction...was that your Spock doesn't come off with the sort of dry humor I remember from TOS, which to me really helped define the character (and really took some amazing turns in some of the TOS novels). And overall, too, that lack of banter really lent to an overall "cold" tone to the story. I'm curious to know what motivated that decision...is that part of the overall theme or feel you're trying to explore?

I spotted a few minor punctuation errors, but overall I found the technical writing quality quite good.

Thanks! Glad to hear it!

I'm doing a bit of an exploration with Spock... partially because, in this universe, humanity has only made contact with the Vulcans, and keeping him rather cool towards others is working in my overall storyline. I wanted to create him in a combination between what we saw in WNMHGB and his Kohlinar state in TMP.

I just got back from vacation, so I'll be getting back to work on the story soon.

You're very welcome!

So I gather from your comment that Earth has only made contact with the Vulcans (and no other races) that the interstellar distances between various civilizations are much further than they are in the canon Trek universe, or that there are fewer other races in general?

And pardon me for missing the long acronym...

(And PM coming your way!)
