Important Note:
If you do not recall or haven't seen the Star Trek: (2009 movie) or the Star Trek: First Contact film, it is highly recommended that you watch those two movies before starting on your Star Trek chronological viewing marathon.

Star Trek: Enterprise (Seasons 1-4)
An Unclear or Unexplained Alternate Prequel Time Line:
(Conflicts With Other Series): Can be watched before Original Series if desired. However, it is highly recommended to watch this series last as some kind of unexplained First Contact altered time line or not at all. For one, Star Trek: Enterprise did not become a prequel show until the 4th Season. Secondly, getting your average first time viewer to pick up on the Trek references before hand is next to impossible, as well. Personally, besides a few unneeded explanations in Season 4: I believe there is nothing really lost if a person never watches this series at all (Unless of course you are a die hard fan of the series or something).

Star Trek: The Animated Series
Can be watched after Star Trek: Original Series (Seasons 1-3)
Although the series is not considered canon, it has been referred to on occasion on Deep Space Nine and Enterprise. However, the real problem is to get an average viewer to take a 1970s animated television show seriously to begin with. So it is highly recommended to watch this series towards the end (as supplementary information) if desired.

Please post your personal Trek viewing orders or thoughts.

Thank you.

How's that for a constructive opinion: What's the point of a chronological viewing order of all the Star Trek series (following the internal chronology of the fictional universe), when you're postponing two complete series (The Animated Series and Enterprise) for no reason whatsoever? That makes it a "I'm only watching the series I like"-list, doesn't it?

I've asked this of others and received widely different answers. Where exactly would you place Star Trek: Insurrection?

NCC-1701:

No, my friend. You will note that I said that you can watch those series in the appropriate places (Enterprise before TOS and the Animated Series after TOS) if so desired. Furthermore, it is not just a matter of taste then it is a matter of logic. I already explained my reasons at the end of my original post on this. However, here are two more detailed explains why I chose Enterprise to be watched last (if at all).

1. Enterprise paints a different picture of the 22nd Century (that we already knew). It goes out of it's way to blatantly disregard the Core Star Trek Time Line. Things within the 22nd Century were clearly described to us in the episodes TOS's "The Cage", TOS's "Balance of Terror", TOS's "Turnabout Intruder", TNG's "Matter of Time, TNG's "First Contact" (The episode), TNG's "Relics", and DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations". In other words, it was made very clear long ago that the 22nd Century was supposed to be a lot more primitive and different than the way we see it on Enterprise. Instead, we have a prequel series that looks more like the 24th Century than the 22nd Century. Now, I am not disputing that there wasn't canonical errors on the other shows. The difference is that the errors on Enterprise change the very thing (The 22nd Century) which this series is supposed to be based upon (Which is a prequel series).

2. Secondly, even if you explained Enterprise as some kind of Unexplained First Contact Altered Time Line or TCW Time Line (Temporal Cold War). New viewers are not going to understand that let alone pick up on the other Trek references when they watch Enterprise. In other words, it's like skipping to the end of the book and knowing certain facts when your not supposed to. Your going to spoil it for yourself when you first watch Enterprise and then later watch the other series.

As for the Animated Series: It was never considered canon (even though DS9 and ENT referred to it). So this means that it really isn't a part of the Core Star Trek Time Line. I mean, there are tons of Star Trek novels out there and those are not considered canon. The novels are a different medium, just like the Animated Series is a different medium. In fact, besides the die hard fans, the Animated Series was not intended to be viewed by your average adult at the time, too. However, that doesn't mean I don't own the series, or wouldn't be willing to watch it as supplemental bonus material (if I felt the desire to).

Oh, and although Enterprise is considered canon that doesn't mean it makes logical sense in fitting in with the Core Star Trek Time Line. So some necessary adjustments based on common sense or logic need to be factored into the equation.

Side Note:

Besides, if I were to take the literal interpretation of a chronological viewing order with all of Star Trek, I would follow the Stardates and flip between watching the various different episodes of the different series back and forth like a yo yo. Which would be a head ache. Plus, seeing a lot of Stardates are not listed. It is impossible to get an accurate viewing order, too. So watching it by Seasons is the most logical choice.

I've asked this of others and received widely different answers. Where exactly would you place Star Trek: Insurrection?

T'Girl:

The Stardate for Star Trek Insurrection is listed approximately as Stardate:52200. The second episode (Shadows and Symbols) within the 7th Season of Deep Space Nine's Stardate is 52152.6. The following 14 episodes having an unknown Stardate before we reach the next listed Stardate in the episode titled "Penumbra" (Stardate:52576.2). Now, with that information taken into account: My best guess is that Insurrection happens shortly after Jadzia's death or while Worf has just supposedly gotten over her. So after dealing with Jadzia's death and Ezri being on the station, Worf decides to see the crew of the Enterprise as an escape or a break away from his position on Deep Space Nine (In Star Trek Insurrection). Thus, if I wanted a more exact placement: I would place Insurrection right after "After Image". At least, that's my 2 cents worth, anyways.

In other words: if you want a more exact placement, it could look like this...

Deep Space Nine Season 7:

Image in the Sand

Shadows and Symbols
(Worf helps Jadzia get into Klingon Heaven)

Afterimage
(Worf tells Ezri to stay, but still needs time)

Star Trek: Insurrection
(Worf takes a break away from DS9)

Take Me Out to the Holosuite

However, I decided to make my viewing order uncomplicated as much as possible and place the Trek movies in-between various seasons of the Trek series all while giving you the impression that it could have happened at that particular point in time. The reason for this is that it is very complex or hard to watch a series based just on the Stardates. Especially when a lot of the Stardates are not even listed. My method simply stream lines or slightly adjusts the Stardate issue and still manages to make sense of the events within a chronological time line (as close to perfection as possible).

Plus, I always thought it made more sense that Worf would fly off to see the Enterprise crew in Star Trek Insurrection as an escape from his grief over Jadzia's death (In DS9's Tears of the Prophets), too. Plus, the Stardate listed for Star Trek Insurrection is an approximation. So that means the number is a guess and could have very well been rounded up or inaccurate. So placing Star Trek Insurrection right after Deep Space Nine Season 6 and Voyager Season 4 is a nice fit. At least for me, anyways.

Hope that helps.

Sincerely:

~J.

Looking at the Stardates more closely, "Voyager Season 1" should actually take place before "Star Trek Generations". So it should look like this now....

Star Trek: The Next Generation (Season 7)
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Season 3)
Star Trek: Voyager (Season 1)
Star Trek: Generations
Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (Season 4)

And here is what the update looks like as my fully completed list...

I fixed the title for you! ;)

Star Trek Chronological Viewing Order (for those of us who have deemed Enterprise and TAS unpalatable):

Interesting that In a Mirror Darkly somehow made it into canon, though.PS. I think Trek 2009 was explained quite well re: the new timeline. NuSpock even takes a moment to point it out during the film in case the casual observer missed it.

Bill Cosby:

Ha, ha, ha... yeah. I guess that would be a more accurate title description for my Viewing Order.

Interesting that In a Mirror Darkly somehow made it into canon, though.

Yeah, there are five reasons why I included "In A Mirror Darkly" into the Core Star Trek Time Line.

1. It integrates flawlessly into the Core Star Trek Time Line.

2. It enhances the Original Series episode "Tholian Web".

3. It shows you just how powerful the classic 23rd Century ships and technology really was.

4. It enriches the world of the Mirror Universe.

5. It had an impressive production and direction and is probably the best Enterprise episode(s) worth mentioning.

Now, as for a more detailed explanation for the Mirror Universe Two Parter fitting into the Core Time Line: Well, it doesn't really conflict with any of the other series. For one, it is clearly established within Star Trek that the Mirror Universe has always had a different turn of events than the Original Time Line. Secondly, when the Mirror versions of Archer and Hoshi check up on their Original Universe counterparts with the Defiant's computer, it simply mentions that their counterparts were a part of the first Warp 5 ship (with no mention of the name Enterprise).

Now, the rest of Star Trek Enterprise episodes conflicts with the other series in regards to it's depiction of the 22nd Century, though. In fact, Enterprise comes off more like the 24th Century than the 22nd Century.

However, it makes perfect sense that the Mirror Universe could have advanced more quickly on a technological level in the 22nd Century because of the Empire's endless thirst for conquering new planets and civilizations. Besides, it's the Mirror Universe. Things are supposed to be alternate and different. So no explanation is really needed for this Enterprise Mirror Universe to make any sense, anyways. That's the whole beauty behind this Mirror Universe two parter.

PS. I think Trek 2009 was explained quite well re: the new timeline. NuSpock even takes a moment to point it out during the film in case the casual observer missed it.

Yeah, this is exactly what Star Trek: Enterprise needed from day one. It needed a plausible explanation as to why things were presented differently than what was described to us in the other series. What was the Temporal Cold War really about and what was it's specific effects? How did Zefram Cochran and Lily advance themselves technologically from listening to Picard and crew? What one specific event started this time line we seen on Enterprise to begin with?

Side Note:

Also, I do consider Enterprise a part of canon. I just treat as some kind of unexplained messed up alternate time line (Most Likely Due to the events in First Contact The Movie and the Temporal Cold War).

That's the definitive order of how Star Trek should be watched.

Afterimage

Star Trek: Insurrection
(Worf takes a break away from DS9)
Take Me Out to the Holosuite
http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Star_Trek:_Deep_Space_Nine
I'm going to try watching these three in that order, watching Worf very carefully.
Thanks.

T'Girl:

I was quickly scanning through the Deep Space Nine episodes with unknown Stardates again and I spotted something. The episode titled "Chrysalis" was a station based episode that didn't have Worf in it. This makes me think that Insurrection could very well happen after "Take Me Out to the Holosuit" instead. The reason for this is that it gives you the impression that a certain amount of time has past, with Worf not being on the station.

In other words, it could very well look like this, instead...

Deep Space Nine Season 7:

Image in the Sand

Shadows and Symbols
(Worf helps Jadzia get into Klingon Heaven)

Afterimage
(Worf tells Ezri to stay, but still needs time)

Take Me Out to the Holosuite

Star Trek: Insurrection
(Worf takes a break away from DS9)

Chrysalis
(Worf doesn't appear to be on the station)

Treachery, Faith and the Great River
(Worf and Martok discuss a missing shipment)

As for the other unknown Stardate DS9 episodes (Before Penumbra): There doesn't appear to be a plausible reason for Insurrection to be placed in any of these other unknown Stardated episodes. So Insurrection being placed after "Take Me Out to the Holosuit" seems like the best spot at this point.

Let me know what you think.

Oh, and your welcome. I hope this finally nails down the exact placement for you (this time).

Sincerely:

Oh... I think I understand now.

Luther_Sloan subscribes to the idea that the events of Star Trek: First Contact resulted in an alternate timeline for Enterprise. Is this so?

Luther_Sloan subscribes to the idea that the events of Star Trek: First Contact resulted in an alternate timeline for Enterprise. Is this so?

No. Though the idea does originate from Braga. It was his half-baked after-the-fact rationalization to explain all the continuity errors that kept popping up in the show.

However, there is no real evidence this is so, and Manny Coto ignored the idea when he took over and presented ways for the events of Enterprise to be connected to the proper Trekverse.

See, that's just the problem. Enterprise makes more sense as an altered time line than as part of the Core Trek Time Line. The excuses I have heard on on many forums over the years used to rationalize Enterprise as a part of the Original Time Line seems like a half baked attempt at someone trying to shove a square peg into a round hole.

Whatever the creators rationale might have been. We have to use our own logic or intelligence as each of us sees fit when trying to explain the goofy mistakes they have made on Enterprise. And the best explanation thus far (to come down the pipe) is that is an Alternate First Contact Time Line.

Sure that idea may not be considered canon. Then again, there are canonical errors on the rest of the other series that are considered canon and folks have rationalized their way around those.

I just don't see why fans can't continue to do the same for Enterprise?

Actually as an Enterprise fan, I just try to enjoy the television series for what it is... it is a television series.

Regardless, nice work on the chronology. I know I get confused thinking about what took place when during DS9, VOY and the TNG movies were happening at the same time!

But, the "timeline was changed because of First Contact" theory doesn't work. There were no changes on DS9 or Voyager after First Contact happened. And to further solidify this, the Voyager episode Relativity even mentions First Contact and its temporal implications, saying there are none. They say the Borg's activities in the 21st century had no real impact on the timeline.

And besides, it isn't even that good an excuse. How does the Borg trying to stop Zefram Cochrane's warp flight and humanity's first contact with aliens explain why the Romulans have cloaking ability 100 years before they should?
