Setal looked over the shield schematics. She missed the more familiar Rihhansu systems of her old life, but now that life was over and she had a new one. Being the chief of engineering had it's advantages as well, even if it was more of a title then an actual position. She knew she wasn't trusted yet, and was more of a liaison to Chief Brik'nal, but her views of Mehien'Shan meant she would still do her best even with the chief looking over her shoulder. The captain, even against his upbringing had shown her much kindness, even after she had tried to steal his ship under orders of the Tal'Shiar. If not for him, her and her team would either have been in a Federation jail, or dead. As she worked she heard the doors to engineering open, and heard the familiar footsteps of Shar approaching her. With a ship that small, it was not hard to learn how to tell who was who, even without looking.
"What can I do for you Shar?" she asked.
"Setal," he replied in an official tone. "Although I do not mind personally, you are still ranked as a Crewman 2nd Class. It would be proper to address me as Lt, or Sir."
"Yes sir," she replied. In the years she and her her team were stuck on the disabled Chimera, she gained more of an informal attitude. "What can I do for you Lt."
"The captain asked me to bring these sensor modifications to you, to get your opinion," he replied as he handed her the PADD in his hand. "And to see if you've made progress on the shields."
"Yes sir," she pointed to the screen. "According to this, the new design will help hide the ship."
"Like a cloak?"
"Not quite," she corrected. "As you know cloaking technology is still restricted to use on the Defiant only, as per regulations listed in the Treaty of Algernon. The ship will still be visible, but it makes it much more difficult for sensors to detect us. We'll seem more like a rock floating in space."
"So more like stealth technology Humans used centuries ago."
"Yes sir, It'd take about a day to install the emitters."
"Cant you make modifications to the current emitters?"
"No sir," she replied, frustrated that she couldn't get that part of the design to work. "Unfortunately the design doesn't do much to actually protect the ship. The new shields need to run in tandem with the old ones. Luckily the new design takes very little energy, so it won't be to much of a drain."
"Thats good, how about these sensors?" he asked as he handed her the PADD.
"I'll get right on it sir," she replied, scrolling through the data on the PADD's screen. "The theory looks sound, using gravity lens to focus the sensors. How have you corrected for dilation?"
"I was thinking of using the lens for that. Positioning it at different distances from the sensor array. There is one other problem with it I was hoping you could help with."
"Whats that sir?"
"Keeping the gravity field stable." he replied, leaning against the bulkhead. "I was hoping you could use your knowledge of Romulan systems to help with that. Romulans have been using an artificial singularity for decades, and keeping it stable."
"Yes sir, I'll get right on-" she was interrupted as the yellow alert klaxon's started blearing.
[This is the Captain speaking, All hands, go to yellow alert, and prepare for Red Alert. The USS Cerberus is under attack, and we are on course to intercept. ETA 20 minutes, I want everyone ready to switch to Red Alert in 15.]
"Well, guess I better get back to the bridge." Shar said, heading towards the door. "You make sure you keep those engines running."
"Aye sir," Setal replied, never a dull moment she though.
On the bridge people were running about getting things ready. Not a frantic run, but more of a finely honed task. Personal phasers were being handed out, and consoles were being reconfigured for tactical readiness.
"Dur, ETA?"
"12 minutes Sir," replied the Bajoran.
"Tactical?" Kaziarl asked, turning towards Lt Walch.
"All stations report ready to switch to Red Alert," she replied as Shar stepped out of the turbolift. The calm looking Andorian walked to his console without saying a word.
"Nice of you to join us Lt." Kaziarl said, jokingly.
"No problem sir," he replied with a grin. "wouldn't miss this for the world."
"Sir," Dur Tyran called from the helm console. "We're within viewing range."
"On screen," he ordered.
On the view screen, the USS Cerberus seemed to be hanging by a thread. The attacking ship moving around it with ease.
"Sensors?"
"Cerberus shields down 12%," Shar reported. "She's having trouble maneuvering to retaliate."
"Hail the Cerberus."
"Aye Sir, channel open."
"Cerberus, this is Chimera, do you read?"
[Yes Chimera, loud and clear,] Captain Grinshaw appeared on the view screen, smoke filling the air around him. [Care to give us a hand Captain?]
"We're on our way Frank, about 10 minutes out. Might be sooner if you can lead them this way a bit."
[No problem, their leaving our engines alone,] he replied in a thick Scottish accent. [See you in a few.]
The channel closed and the view returned to the Cerberus. The ship started to move towards them, with the aggresor in her wake.
"Shar, is there a match from that ship to the one Delta shift encountered?"
"Yes sir," he replied looking at his screen. "I'd almost say it was the same ship."
"Alright, lets get ready. All hands, switch to Red Alert."
Almost instantly the lights dimmed and the bridge was washed with a red glow from the emergency lighting. The computers locks on the personal phasers were lifted as they began to charge. The ablative hull armor that had been installed earlier that day deployed as the ship took on a solid, gun metal gray look. With the shape of the ship, and the blank look of the armor, the ship looked like a large gray hockey puck. As the crew finished preparations the two Chimera class vessels moved into range of each other, and strafed along side each other to give the Chimera crew a shot at the enemy.
"Fire phasers, focus on shields and weapons." Kaziarl ordered. orange-red beams of energy reached out hungrily for the enemies shields. The ship veered off and backed away, as though trying to decide what to do about this second ship. The Chimera and the Cerberus swung around for another pass, focusing their fire on the dorsal shields.
"Enemy shields down 16% sir," Walch reported.
"Launch the fighter wing, tell Captain Grinshaw to do the same."
As the too ships pulled away from their target to ready for another pass, four fighters from each ship launched from their lower decks and took up position around their mother ships.
[Chimera, this is Alpha Squad, we're in position and ready to rock.]
"Confirmed Lt." Kaziarl replied, "Link your targeting computers in with ours. We're going to need to focus our fire."
[Affirmative Chimera, linking now.]
The Chimera was the first to swing back around and make a pass on the ship. The fighters moved to the ventral side of the ship as they passed over the top of the enemy ship, firing their phaser. As the Chimera pulled away again, they launched a torpedo from their aft launcher. It streaked into the shields and punched through to the hull.
"Dorsal shields down sir, that torpedo damaged their emitters,"
"Fighter wing, get in there and target shields and weapons." Kaziarl ordered, wanting to take advantage of this momentary break. "Helm, bring us about and target their engines. Have the Cerberus do the same."
"Aye sir, coming about." Dur replied.
[Target confirmed. Moving in.]
The fighters from both ships swarmed the enemy vessel as the Chimera and Cerberus focused on their engines. As the rest of the of the shields began to fail, and the engines started to show signs of stress, it seemed like this skirmish was going to be over.
"All ships, hold fire. Lock a tractor beam on that ship."
"Aye sir, tractor beam online."
"Hail them."
"Channel open sir," replied Lt Walch.
"Hostile Vessel, identify yourself."
There was no response.
"Sir," Shar called from his station. "Sensors indicate an overload in their engine core."
"What?" he asked, surprised. "I didnt realize we had damaged them that much."
"We didn't, this reads as an internal issue," he replied. "Their doing it themselves."
"See if you can lock onto one of them and beam them to the brig." Kaziarl ordered.
"Aye sir. transporting now."
"Helm, get us out of here. Release the tractor beams and order the fighters to return to their berths."
"Aye sir," Dur's fingers flew over the console as he executed commands. The two ships picked up their fighters and moved away from the enemy. As they reached a safe distance the ship exploded, hitting the two sisters with a massive shock wave nearly sending Kaziarl to the bulk head.
"Damage report?"
"Minimal damage to shields sir," Walch reported. "A few bumps, but no casualties. Cerberus was hit a little harder, bet she's reporting all green."
"Did we get one of them in the brig?"
"Yes sir, security reports she's not to happy either."
"Helm, set course to Miranda Outpost, best speed." Kaziarl ordered as he stood up from his chair. "Just make sure you don't leave the Cerberus behind. I'll be in the brig talking to our guest."
"Aye sir, course laid in."
Kaziarl stepped into the turbolift, not sure what to think about this new adversary.
