STAR TREK:CHALLENGER [cooperative]

Oooh...that would definitely be interesting.

Now, would Reinhardt be the supervising officer for the Gamma Quadrant Exploration Task Force (or whatever we want to call it)?

Yup, that would be the idea. We'd need to make Reinhardt a believable forty-something if we're making Woolfe supposed to be in his eighties. I would have suggested Carla Gugino, but she's only 37 - a bit too young to be an Admiral, I think.

Marcia Cross could be interesting. Kim Cattrall might be too. But they might be too young for Jeffrey Combs to be considered old enough to be their father. We may need to consider recasting Wolfe to a much older actor -

David Warner could be interesting (he's 67 but could play older) and Susannah Harker (at age 43) could possibly pass as an Admiral (she plays his sidekick in a series of radio dramas, was also in House of Cards as Mattie Storrin and in Pride and Prejudice as one of the Bennett sissters, iirc) and Anna Chancellor, one of Harker's costars in P&P recently played a Director of Intelligence in Brit-drama Spooks so she could be old enough to do a minor Admiral.

I'm just tossing out ideas, feel free to slam them!

If Wolfe is in his 80s, then Marcia Cross would be a good choice. Kim Cattrall *could* be a good pick, since Wolfe could have been in his 30s when she was conceived.

A revised version of the teaser. Thoughts?

TEASER

TEXT scrolls up the screen:

ON STARDATE 52988.31, THE DOMINION WAR DREW TO
A CLOSE. WHILST THE KLINGONS AND THE ROMULANS
REBUILT THEIR CRIPPLED EMPIRES, STARFLEET RENEWED
THEIR POLICY OF EXPLORATION.

SINCE THAT DATE, FOURTEEN YEARS HAVE PASSED ...

EXT. DEEP SPACE

MAJESTIC, BEAUTIFUL and SERENE - an ubroken field of stars stretches as far as the eye can see ...

CAPTION STARDATE 66402.01

UNTIL the BAJORAN WORMHOLE blossoms into reality and the USS DEFIANT soars out and approaches the camera.

SMASH CUT TO:

INT. DEFIANT / BRIDGE

A handsome twenty-something male, at the helm, passes his hands over his controls - this is LIEUTENANT JG FEDERICO ROSSI.

ROSSI
Welcome to the Gamma Quadrant, ladies,
gentlemen and crewmembers of other and
neither gender ...

AZHAN (OS)
As soon as we're clear, take us to warp.

ROSSI
Aye, Sir.

REVEAL the figure who just gave the order. Small breasts, muscular physique, shoulder length hair and hazel eyes that glitter with the anticipation of doing some exploration.

This is Commander Azhan 982 and s/he is a Hermat.

S/he shifts in hir chair when the stars on the main viewscreen elongate as the Defiant goes to warp.

AZHAN
ETA?

ROSSI
Five hours, twenty minutes.

EXT. SPACE

DEFIANT is at warp speed - the stars zipping past.

INT. DEFIANT / COMMANDER'S QUARTERS

Azhan lies on the bed holding a PADD, engrossed in whatever it is that s/he's reading s/he barely registers the first chime of the communicator. The second stirs hir from hish reverie and s/he hits the communicator :-

AZHAN
Azhan.

ROSSI (over comms)
Rossi here. We're on approach to the
Omarion Nebula, Commander. I thought
you'd want to know ...

AZHAN
Thankyou, Lieutenant. I'll be up there in
a second. Azhan out.

Azhan taps hish communicator - tosses hish PADD back onto the bunk and we HOLD on the PADD as Azhan exits. The title page of the book that Azhan was reading shows it to be 'RISK IS MY GAME: A BIOGRAPHY OF JAMES T. KIRK'.

INT. DEFIANT / BRIDGE

Azhan strides onto the bridge. On the viewscreen, the gaseous flares of a nebula flicker with interior light and a dull, ruddy planet grows nearer to the ship.

Rossi looks back from his position at the helm as Azhan takes up position in front of hish chair.

AZHAN
Mister Commerson, raise the Founders on
the usual channels ...

A crewman (COMMERSON) goes to work - another crewman turns from the science station:

CREWMAN
Sir, this can't be right - the sensors aren't
picking up any lifeforms on the planetoid.

Azhan arches hish eyebrow.

AZHAN
None at all?

The crewman nods affirmative.

CREWMAN
None at all.

AZHAN
Commerson?

COMMERSON
No response on any channel.

Azhan sits, steeples hish fingers in front of hir and considers hish options as hish crew turn their heads from their stations in front of hir to see what s/he's going to do.

After a moment of silence:

AZHAN
Ensign Kelby, you're with me. Rossi, you
have the conn ...

Azhan rises, exits the Bridge, closely followed by the youthful crewman who had been manning the science station.

EXT. FOUNDER PLANETOID

Rocky ground as far as the eye can see, no life and no vegetation can be seen as Azhan and the crewman materialise at the peak of a rocky mound and look round.

AZHAN
Crewman?

The crewman works her tricorder - then shrugs:

CREWMAN
Still nothing, I'm afraid. I can run more
scans if you want, but ...

AZHAN
Do it.

S/he scans the horizon for a moment whilst the crewman conducts further sensor sweeps, then taps hir communicator.

AZHAN
Azhan to Defiant.

ROSSI (over comms)
Defiant. Rossi here. Find anything, Sir?

Azhan looks across at the crewman - but she just shakes her head again:

AZHAN
Nothing.
(beat)
Lieutenant, open a channel to Starfleet
Headquarters. I need to speak to Admiral
Reinhardt immediately ...

PULL BACK from Azhan to show the vast swathes of rocky ground that lie around the two Starfleet officers - the absence of anything but rocky ground ...

TITLE SEQUENCE

Oooh...definitely a winner! I like the sense of mystery you created with the additional bit right before the cut to the title sequence.

I thought it might be good for us to establish the notes for the first few years, so we know what we're working from and what we're working to.

I'm proposing five six episode seasons - the workload shouldn't be too heavy that way and we should hopefully finish, at least, the first year of the show.

These are just my ideas, so throw your own out and we'll be able to try and mesh them, with luck:

SEASON 1

1 - Pilot
2 - Plague Episode

Rossi's life-partner dies in the episode sending Rossi spiralling into heavy depression in the remaining episodes. I hypothesised elsewhere about his partner being a female Joined Trill whose next host would be male and turn up in the fleet - and the relationship would be resurrected. How about we play with expectations from the start - and, along with Rossi and his life-partner having a newborn baby, have his partner being male from the start.

3 - TBC

After his partners death in the previous episode, Rossi spirals into heavy depression and is temporarily removed from duty (possible cameo by the Challenger's previously unseen Counselor) leading to Abtahi becoming the Acting CONN Officer.

4 - TBC
5 - TBC

6 - Bridgehead

Somehow the space around the wormhole is altered so that it makes ship passage and communication through impossible. Challenger and the other ships of the fleet come up against the Shaleel - and the Hammersley and Alcyone (and maybe the Archer) are damaged beyond repair and most of their crews murdered.

Security Chief of the Challenger is killed in the same battle and when the ships command crew is incapacitated, it is up to Rossi to take command of the Challenger and save the ship (but, not the day ...).

At this point, the survivors from the colony the crews rescued in the first episode are still with the fleet (the season could take place over a month) and lots of them are killed in the assault when the Hammersley is lost.

SEASON 2

Lt Commander Ataan, with the Alcyone lost, comes onboard Challenger as the ships new Security Chief which complicates her growing relationship with Captain Azhan.

Rossi is back to Active Duty (with a promotion to Lt Commander for his actions in the previous seasons finale) and Lieutenant Abtahi returns to support capacity.

At some point mid-season, the colonists from the premiere episode are eventually offloaded to a supposedly safe planetoid with a Starfleet team to help them (Abtahi could be the planets senior Starfleet crewmember or it could be Ataan - with Abtahi as the Challengers new Security Chief) and the planet is, in a future episode (maybe not even this season) discovered to bear evidence about the Shaleel and the Founders.

By the end of the season, Losano, Tilan and her scientists have found a way to return space to normal around the wormhole and normal service resumes.

SEASON 3

New additions to the fleet complicate matters as Admiral Reinhardt makes the decision to personally oversee the taskforce (?).

I just imagine that's the type of show this could be, full of action and exploration and hurtling you through an adventure that's tightly plotted.

Still no sign of friedebarth!

I'm sure he is, maybe the internet cafe he's been using has shut down or something or he's gone on holiday and didn't manage to mention it.

Still, hopefully he'll like what we've done so far.

A possibility, though I'd worry that the Sovereign could overshine the Galaxy Class ship that we want to focus on.

Maybe if we do the arc I've proposed above, at some point, when Reinhardt turns up, she could come with her own ship to assume taskforce flagship duties and that could be a Sovereign?

It doesn't necessarily fit any more than using a Galaxy does. In fact, it could make more sense to use a Galaxy Class since we've seen evidence of them in the futures we've seen depicted, but we've never once seen a Sovereign outside of the TNG movies.

Plus, we saw the Challenger in the future in VOY and it was a Galaxy Class which is why we ended up using the Galaxy Class in the first place.

Also, the size of the Galaxy Class is one of the reasons it would make a good flagship for the taskforce. It's got the extra space to create triage facilities, extensive sickbay and refugee/guest quarters which the Sovereign Class just doesn't have.
