Star Trek ... CGI making it special again

I'm a purist too. But I'm secure in the knowledge the original will never be lost. I've had my gripes about the CGI too. Funny enough, the CGI team isn't blind. They have made changes. But then The Corbomite Maneuver.

Wow.

The CGI on this one is really nice. The enterprise looks really good, and the shot when the Fesarius fills the screen, with the enterprise in the foreground. Just a beautiful image. Just top work, real class, it blew me away.

The CGI team at CBS is getting better at this my friends. They are really getting thier groove on. I appreciate that.

I'd cross post the image buuut, I guess I shouldn't. But man, this image of the Fesarius over enterprise ... has really sold me on the CGI team. Fantastic work.
:)

So now I've seen it on tv, smartass. And the lights are just as white as they were on youtube.

I think you must have been watching a different television than I.

I don't agree with all of the CBS-Digital decisions, but overall, I really like what they're doing. It's fun to look forward to a new TOS episode every week!

Don't ascribe ulterior motivations to my observations, ace. You have no fucking clue.

Don't...get...personal. See how I'm nobly refraining from saying something smartass myself to you.

Also, don't double-post.

Thank you. Everyone may return to the usual nitpicking that we all do and love. :p

I just saw the image of the fesarius hovering, filling the screen, above the enterpise. (check out trekmovie.com for the image)... and WOW. Frakin' Grokin', wow. THAT is an image of the enterprise Trekkies can cherrish.

The CGI work seems to be, well, getting to be REALLY impressive. Especially considering it's not a big, massive, studio, thing. I gotta say, as an old time trekkie, the new CGI FX are not just respectful, but fun and daring. I REALLY like the work that's going on. I celebrate it! It's a wonderful chance to bring Trek to the younger genration too. I mean, can any old time Trekkie not see these and see it's love and class act?

I really think something special is going on here.

Imagine what Trek 11 will look like? That will be fun. I understand that Trek is about dialogue and ideas; of course, but some sweet CG ideas brought to vivid life will be nice too. I'm thinking exciting aliens, planetscapes and unusual sights never seen in trek before. Imagine LOST with CG visuals for unseen concepts you don't see. I think Abrams will bring this to the screen.

Lost DOES have CGI effects, and how the heck do you use CG to show an unseen concept you don't see? :wtf:

The CGI Fesarius looked nice, but that's it. Aside from that, I haven't really been all that impressed with remastered TOS. The CG Enterprise looks faker than it did in the 60s. The planets look radically different than in the originals (like the android planet in "I, Mudd" now having rings)

Although, I don't understand the complaints about the bussard collectors. People whine about them spinning. But they spun in the 60s, so what's the issue?
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who feels this way, especially about the Enterprise. It still feels very cartoonish, especially after watching the original versions of the episodes. I will admit that she looked a lot better in The Corbomite Manuever, but I still can't get used to it.

The transfers are excellent; I just wish they had put more effort into making the old girl look spectacular from the start, rather than in spurts. Heck, the NX-01 still feels more real than the remastered 1701, and the former never had a physical model.

It's a fad that will likely wear thin as more and more see how obvious the new f/x stand out alongside the remaining live-action footage.

Dream on

I have to admit, while I love TOS, I haven't really watched a whole episode in a long time... until TOS:RE. The cleaner, more colorful look, even on a regular tv would be worth a look alone, but the FX work is something special. I really hope Balance of Terror is redone though...it was a huge disappointment.

The CGI enhances the visuals and makes it more consistent/accurate but doesn't change the story. So it is a welcome change. Some of the cheap effects etc were a pet peeve of mine and the CGI makes me excited to see all the episodes again.

"The CG Enterprise looks faker than it did in the 60s."

:wtf:

The 60's model was a physical model. They were NOT using a CG model back then.

I'm going to start a list titled "The 10 most ridicklous reasons why TOS-R sucks"

:brickwall: I thought I made this clear why it isn't a fad, in comparison to say..colorization. You just don't get it do you....

And the HD-DVD releases move inexorably on...

Regardless of how the effects turn out, this is indeed special treatment. How many other shows from the 60's are getting this much attention? How many are considered worthy of a complete digital facelift to HD with new effects and third DVD release?

That said, I hope they redo some of these new effects. The nacelle caps still look kind of...like shitty CG, no where near as good as the originals. Or the DS9 model. Or the ENT Defiant CGI model.

Some of the model shots are really off too. But inprovements will probably come. They're having color errors on some parts of the ship. The colors look kind of washed out and flat. The deflector is grey instead of bronze. Is this a result of CG processor overload or something?

Startrek.com has preview images of the Remastered "Galileo 7".
Yeah, seen 'em. More cartoony cgi shots. Big fucking deal. Except for the occasional decent shot most of it is lame and unimpressive.
