Star Trek ... CGI making it special again

I just saw the image of the fesarius hovering, filling the screen, above the enterpise. (check out trekmovie.com for the image)... and WOW. Frakin' Grokin', wow. THAT is an image of the enterprise Trekkies can cherrish.

The CGI work seems to be, well, getting to be REALLY impressive. Especially considering it's not a big, massive, studio, thing. I gotta say, as an old time trekkie, the new CGI FX are not just respectful, but fun and daring. I REALLY like the work that's going on. I celebrate it! It's a wonderful chance to bring Trek to the younger genration too. I mean, can any old time Trekkie not see these and see it's love and class act?

I really think something special is going on here.

Yeah, I agree. After having seen each episode numerous times I thought I was done watching TOS (or visiting this forum) on a regular basis. But now I anxiously anticipate each episode, even the bad ones. The new transfer is great and the CGI effects are very nice and getting better. And once they show the bloody thing in high definition I will be watching it again with great anticipation. They have certainly hooked this old time fan.

I am really enjoying the new TOS...I mean TOS remastered.

In the past when I watched TOS I would always imagine what the EFX were 'supposed' to look like...as if this were a faded 'historical document' and the footage was obscured in some way (think old Earth probe images transmitted with distortion).

Now I don't have to pretend anymore, it's right there on the screen. My initial impressions were good but a bit underwhelmed; I'm happy to discover that they started a bit smaller and have gotten more advanced yet staying respectful.

Another fan of the new effects. With all the bitching from the 'purists' on this bord I was startign to wonder if I was the only one. So what if there are new effects? The stories and message of the show is the same, it just has prettier pictures. Plus fewer people are likely to laugh and dismiss the show because of those 'shitty 60's special effects'

I really wish the studio would release some HD stills of the new effects. The Enterprise flying past the yellow ringed planet in 'I, Mudd' for example would make a great Wallpaper.

To repeat my post from another thread:

The phasers look nice.

The ship whooshing away like a racecar at the end looks HORRIBLE.

This has always been the problem with modern Trek -- no sense of authenticity of these massive ships. No verisimilitude.

Speaking of which, why are the blinking lights on the saucer white now? It was based directly on admiralty law -- ships are required to burn a red light on the port side and a green light on starboard, so that other ships will immediately know which direction they're going in. Of course, the creators of Star Trek served in WWII, so they knew this. Of course, the Okudas DON'T know.

Verisimilitude, people. I for one am not willing to give it up for some pretty pictures.

^I have to take a look at the eps, my sense was that the green/red lights were on top of the saucer and white's on the bottom, or vice versa, but that they were there.

^ Yeah, the green/red lights are on top... white lights on the underside. Just like the original model (and following real-world protocol).

It's a fad that will likely wear thin as more and more see how obvious the new f/x stand out alongside the remaining live-action footage.

But you have to admit, people are watching TOS again. Think about it, sure we have big TOS fans here, but honestly, its been a loooong ass time since you could flip on non cable TV and see the original series and not just the same stuff we've seen for nearly 40 years, but cleaned up, restored and enhanced picture quality and hey... the new effects ain't half bad. They aren't supplanting the story or WHY the original series was good, they're just there to keep our eyes from going "hey this is kinda hokey, look at that ship I can see the wires!" to just enjoying the story. I mean, let's face it, we're used to seeing CGI ships and space scenes. Even B5 SORTA looks dated now, I wouldn't mind seeing a B5-Remastered someday get some new fans too. Since all the old shit was CGI to start with, at least they can go back in, look at the original model work and such, improve where necessary even just a few 'greebles' can do wonders to those older lower poly models.

I'll respectfully disagree with you there, Warped.

As the (un)fortunate case may be - depending on one's preference - these "modified" episodes will likely displace the originals from this point forward.

And I say that as a die-hard TOS fan, and only a passing fan of TOS-R, but that's likely the truth. Of course, there will be a few rabid fans of the originals who swear the modern versions "never happened," but then again there were die-hard holdouts of black-and-white TV sets that stoutly decried color TV as a "passing fad."

I'm not slamming anyone, or making opinion statments, it's just very likely the truth.

The CGI Fesarius looked nice, but that's it. Aside from that, I haven't really been all that impressed with remastered TOS. The CG Enterprise looks faker than it did in the 60s. The planets look radically different than in the originals (like the android planet in "I, Mudd" now having rings)

Although, I don't understand the complaints about the bussard collectors. People whine about them spinning. But they spun in the 60s, so what's the issue?

No more than usual. Trekies are the only people who are even aware of this. It's not even listed in the program guides as anything but "Star Trek."

On the model they looked like massive turbines were working in there. In the CGI they look like spinning lights.

I get that some "purists" will never like the remastered episodes. That's cool. But I love TOS and I look forward to TOS-R every week, not just for the new effects, but also for the beautiful new transfers. I already own all of TOS on DVD, but I'll almost certainly get TOS-R when it comes out on DVD.

Oh, and the lights on the top of the CBS-Digital saucer are indeed red and green. Some people are just digging for reasons to complain.

No, sparky, I was going by what I saw on u-tube. If they are red and green it's damn hard to see. As I said above when someone pointed it out, I'll have to see it on tv.

Don't ascribe ulterior motivations to my observations, ace. You have no fucking clue.

well just dont put much weight into what you see on youtube. Video there is horribly compressed. Details are obscurred. You can barely even see stars on the view screen on the youtube videos.

The only upgraded episode I've seen so far was a VHS copy of "Balance of Terror." Many of my friends are Trek fans, and almost none of them have seen any of the revamped episodes.

I will say that the new material is a fun, respectful way to enjoy the show, which is more than I can say for the "2.0" stuff.

Interesting. Yet you seemed quite willing to jump to the conclusion that the Okudas didn't know or care about the colored lights. And you seem to be quite willing to judge the effects without actually having seen the episode.
