Star Trek ... CGI making it special again

In fact, I've gone through some considerable explanations on specific issues in various threads, and its actually the incessant droning on of "purists" that don't take into account technical issues, and instead replace that with nostalgia and emotional issues that is tiresome.

Well, there's a difference here, in that THIS purist probably has more knowledge of the technical issues (as well as the aesthetic ones) than just about anybody else here.

And with that specific perspective, I have huge objections to the lighting and rendering of these things, as they are not anything approaching photorealistic IMO. It could be that they are well-modeled vessels, but given those other issues, it doesn't really matter, because in most of these instances you have still got the 'cartoony' effect, which to me is a huge step BACKWARD in credibility. It is like going back to the original PATTERNS OF FORCE and making everything look like the dumb little cartoon explosion in the teaser.

As I said they are never going to be like ST:Enterprise FX...they're not meant to be, you can't have it both ways...you can't say leave the shots alone as a purist, and then say they aren't going far enough. What you DO have is compromise...and in this TOS-R has been highly successful, as evidenced by your comment. Regardless, when you compare the decent Enterprise model from 1966 to the CGI, the CGI model is almost always better lit! All these people saying that the models always look more real or better don't know what they're talking about, because without lighting--and the models were poorly lit--the shots will never be that good. So my original point stands...a purist will not sit back and look at both sides of the issue, while those with a more open mind will consider all the elements, and won't be as emotional over a perceived change to their object of worship.

RAMA, not sure what you mean by "the model was poorly lit", but I'm guessing you are smart enough to realize that it was under full studio lighting at the time it was filmed. You probably mean it didn't appear naturally lighted as it might in real space.

The reason for this is that it was necessary to maximize the light used to allow for increased depth of field by using a lower f-stop on the camera to give a sense of scale to the model. This made it appear larger than it is and is a common fx trick used when filming studio models.

BTW, I think all of you should calm down a bit, take your meds and realize that there is no "truth" only subjective opinion. Some people feel that the CGI version looks cartoony and not as "real" as the original, while others appreciate the more realistic lighting offered by the CG version. So?

Who cares. Some of you should take this type of discussion as a learning opportunity on how to be tolerant of differing view points, and stop reifying (look it up) your own subjectivity.

To be honest, as a psychologist, I find such childish arguements tiresome but for some reason Star Trek seems to attract this type of behavior.

I personally haven't seen Remastered

But it looks pretty sweet the CGI effects are high quality

They are pretty damn good a lot of the time, and that with little time or budget.

Ya they look awesome, but other people on the message boards (not to mention any names) will complain no matter what.

Hell, this Star Trek fan has enjoyed the TOS-R. If anything, it has gotten me to sit down and watch them. Not because the new effects make it "better" but it gives me something new to check out.

People do seem to complain some, but generally on this forum I find the criticisms are often well thought out and not wrong, I'd say. It depends on where your coming from. It's purely opinion. I'm definitely with Broccoli too, it's great to see these new VFX... it makes the rest of the show look good.

I, for one, look forward to each week's new offering. Sometimes I'm blown away, sometimes I'm disappointed (just like I was in the 1960's, the first time I watched TOS). Complaining about it is a waste of time. You either watch it or you don't.

"You watched it, you can't un-watch it."

I'm looking forward to "Conscience of the King" this weekend, although I suspect the new special FX work will be minimal (especially compared to "Galileo").

You never know. We MAY actually get a shot of the Astral Queen in the orbiting spaceport.  ;)

I think my version of the Enterprise is better. :)

But then I'm biased

I'm just quoting. :bolian: Nice pics.

Very nice work Waugh. Very nice.

And welcome to the board. I hope we'll see you around here on a regular basis. :)

Well, if this ship is popular enough, I might do others for FS. Now that I have accurate dimensions, I might even scratch build a 1/2 studio scale, but not sure where I would put it, haha.

Just quoting, again. I like to be helpful! ;)

Well after finally seeing an episode of TOS-R, I must admit I didn't hate the CGI ship at all. In fact, while I was afraid it would ruin things for me, I felt they did a great job making it just look a bit updated while sticking to the original. At first, I had planned on buying the original DVDs, but now I think I will buy the TOS-R version.

Nice job, but my ship is available as a stand in if required, haha.

BTW you FSX owners, I finally released the above model on my site. =)
