Star Trek Bridge Commander

I really loved the demo. I found out about this game waaaaay too late to buy the full version brand-new from a store, so I'm still scouring eBay for a seller I can trust.

That's some quite advanced manouvering you're proposing there, nice :techman:

Ramming as a viable tactical option actually never occured to me during my BC playthroughs, now I may just have to go back and try it out.

Reverse ramming can be quite tricky to execute. But once done it can cause significant damage to a ship of similar size to your own whilst only taking about moderate damage to your warp engines if you're lucky.
Be very cautious about ramming a ship front-on. Anything higher than half impulse has a high chance of destroying your ship (assuming the rammed ship is of similar size). If you do survive a ram, chances are your foward weaponry will be destroyed - which is why I prefer aft ramming if possible.

But IMHO it can't compare to that mission in Starfleet Command where you have to fight your mirror universe counterpart, now there's a reason for rage quitting for ya :scream:

Yeah, I know what you're talking about. It's not the counterpart that bothers me, but rather the escorts. Sometimes if you're flying solo, the BPV of the escort ships appears to be so high that you don't really stand a chance.
I don't join the special branch until I'm promoted to Captain. That way when that mission comes around, I should have enough prestige to buy a couple of good escorts myself to even the odds.

^ I remember that level. Drove me nuts.

(BTW I waited like that and I sent 1 BB and 2 DNs against it).

I use the KM 1.0 mod for Bridge Commander. I tried the newer 2009.12 mod, but it breaks much easier than KM 1.0. My issue with BC is the resolution. Everything is wide and ovoid, because I have a widescreen monitor. Also, where the ships used to look gorgeous on their original resolutions, at my resolution (1600x900) they look absolutely awful. The reason I mod? I get to fly the U.S.S. Enterprise-A and stand on the bridge of the E-A as I battle Khan and his U.S.S. Reliant in the Mutara nebula. Sparks flying everywhere, smoke on the bridge, the red alert klaxon bathing everything in red, as I have the ship brought about behind him, rise above his ship and through the static filled viewscreen yell FIRE! Now THAT's fun!

Unfortunately, until a proper resolution mod comes out that won't break the game (and it may never), I have to put up with ovoid planets, suns, and oddly wide saucers from other starships.

The resolution issues are the same reason I can't play Klingon Academy, or as I like to call it, the best Star Trek game ever.

^ I'm wondering if it will stretch on my new widescreen also. Does the game do this even despite setting the monitor to maintain aspect?

It was a fun game. I too have little or no use for the mods, mainly because I wasn't into QB anyway. Extremely boring. The SP campaign was where it's at for me. I had downloaded another campaign, but the voice acting was the worst I've ever heard, and the first mission was impossibly hard. Not much fun there.
The exception was NanoFX which worked with SP. And I certainly don't mean any disrespect to the incredible good work people have done to that game, ship models, and etc. They'd be a gas in multiplayer.

Another game that had a lot of ship models redone which do work with the campaign was X-Wing: Alliance. I loved that game.

It will stretch, even if you set the monitor to maintain aspect.

^ oh noes! And to think this is still happening under the Obama Administration! WHERE ARE THE PRIORITIES!!??

:shifty:

I'll bet it would still work with 1:1 pixel mapping, but not many consumer level monitors have that.

^

Yeah, most monitors don't support 1:1 pixel mapping, so we'll just have to live with oval planets, super long saucers, and fat headed officers.

Yeah well, you get used to the stretched look pretty quickly. Although I have to admit, I haven't tried it on my new 23 inch screen yet, might be more annoying on a bigger monitor.

My monitor's 20"/21", but the aspect ratio is 1600x900, so it's a little wider than most standard monitors, which are 16:10.
