"Star Trek" breaks Imax record as purists grumble (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Imax Corp said on Tuesday its "Star Trek" screenings grossed a record $8.5 million during the film's first weekend, even as some purists complained that the company's big screens were not big enough.

The hotly anticipated science fiction movie garnered $79.2 million at U.S. and Canadian box offices over the weekend, and 11 percent of that figure came from Imax screens.

Imax said that was significant because its screens accounted for less than 2 percent of the venues for "Star Trek." The old record of $6.3 million was set by "The Dark Knight" last summer, although that film played on 94 Imax screens, while "Star Trek" beamed in on 138.

The "Star Trek" Imax contribution shows that moviegoers are pleased with the company's theater experience, Chief Executive Richard Gelfond told Reuters.

"There's no indication at all that the word of mouth is anything but positive," he said.

Yeah, saw that earlier; it is so great to have great Star Trek articles greeting me every morning as headliners in Reuters Entertainment news.

I'm so glad I saw it in IMAX, but the theatre I went to had these seats that rattled and jolted with the action. Gave me the worst headache afterwards.

I saw it in IMAX, and to be honest it was the worst mistake I've ever made.

Half the theater was filled up and we ended up sitting closer than the half way point down the rows.

I've been told those are the bad seats. I still feel like I haven't really seen the movie the way it should be seen.

Why do IMAX locations have seats so close that you can't get a good view of the screen? Seems sort of stupid. "We're the best movie going experience you can have...provided you don't sit in the front half of the theater."

How's about not even HAVING seats that close? Might that not solve the problem?

SmoothieX...

We also had the seats that were tied into the sound system. No big deal for me.

Count me in as one who thought the AMC theater screen I saw it on in Houston was not very impressive. Sure, it looked good since it was a DLP presentation, but the screen was not big enough. I honestly could not tell much difference (if any) in screen size.

I've been to IMAX theaters -- in my area -- that have MUCH bigger screens.

Our IMAX experience was awesome. We went two nights in a row; huge screen, nice seats, sound blows you away. Cell-phone use, ejection enforced. We're going back another couple times while it's still in IMAX this weekend. I'm not looking forward to regular thereafter.

My IMAX experience at AMC was only $3 more but it was not anything more "above and beyond" the current digital screenings they usually have. The screen was 3 stories though but not 5 stories which I think is the traditional minimum standard for true IMAX.

They don't have IMAX around me where Trek is playing, so I saw it on a regular AMC screen once and a Regal screen 2 times...and every time I thought to myself "this really isn't that much bigger than my 52" at home, relatively speaking."

It really is to the point where I will only go to the theater to give my cash to films I want to support. The rest I wait for and netflix.

Perhaps the producers of the next ST movie, seeing how well the current one did in IMAX theaters, will actually shoot some or all of it using IMAX cameras for the "complete" experience.

dude, it's your fault. if you're watching Trek on IMAX, don't fuck with the time. get in early and grab a seat in the back.

I dunno. With so many stadium seat giant theaters, does the IMAX make that big of a difference?

HUGE difference, trust me. but you also have to go to one of these real IMAX screens. I've now seen it in two IMAX theatres. the one I saw it in last night (Air and Space Museum) was way, waaaay better than the AMC IMAX I saw it in last weekend.

so I agree with the "expletive-laden" letter from the "Hollywood actor".

The IMAX theater I saw it in had the huge screen.... and I think I found the sweet spot of the audio system. As soon as I sat down, and even hearing the previews the sound seemed like it was coming right at me, it was surrounding me, couldn't locate the source. When there was talking it sounded like it completely surrounded me, sound effects were above, below, to the left the right of me (all this I was listening to during the previews)... if I moved my head foward 2 feet, or back 1 foot or the side I lost that totally surrounded effect.

I call BS.IMAX is making money off of a lie, because ill bet 90% of their revenue came from moviegoers who don't know they got boned on not seeing the honest IMAX screen size. After seeing Trek on the real IMAX compared to the 'fake' one,its worlds apart.
