Star Trek Books - Where to Start?

Starfleet Corps of Engineers (formerly S.C.E.)
Originally ebooks, a fair number of these are now available in paperback collections. Several tie into other series; for instance, Cold Fusion bridges a minor story point between two DS9-Relaunch books.
It's also had numerous TNG crossovers, including the latest two ebooks to be published. If you want a complete list, I'm sure KRAD, the series' editor, would be willing to post one.

Read the vanguard series and the S.C.E, anything by Krad, David Mack, but the best read ever is Crucible: McCoy by David R George. Outstanding!!

Definitely start with the title. After that you might want to read the Aknowledgements and Historian's Note (if there are any for the novel you're reading). I then recommend that you move onto the first word of the first chapter followed by the second word, the third word, and so forth. Oh, and occasionally you might want to read the author's name on the title page, but IMO they don't mean much.

If you want a great point to "test the waters" without committing to an ongoing series, as well as something with the original cast, I recommend Christoper L. Bennett's Ex Machina, which I just finished reading (about four days ago). A great story that ties seemlessly into canon, has something for everyone in the cast to do (without just dropping someone in for the sake of seeing them), and stands alone as a great Star Trek tale.

If TOS is your thing, I'd then recommend either moving into David R. George's Crucible trilogy or the Vanguard series, both of which offer rich, expansive tales set in the "classic" timeframe. I also recommend Federation by the Reeves-Stevenses - probably the best Trek novel ever written (one of the few tie-in books that I've read that actually matches the source material in excellence).
