Star Trek Books for vacation! Suggestions please!

Hey everyone!

I'm taking my first real vacation since last year and I'm looking for suggestions on what to take to read! I'm still working my way through the books "in order" but I'd like to take a little break.

Specifically I'm looking for fun, lighter books that wrap up in single novels. Something like Rising Son or Battle of Betazed.

In a few days this will be me on the beach!! --chris

have you read any of the older trek books? If not, one i can think of right off the bat is Q Squared by Peter David. Great book. Took it with me on vacation one summer.
I'm doing the same thing, in 2 months i'm going on vacation. I've got all 5 Voyager Kirsten Beyer books, i've been thinking of taking those, since i still haven't read them yet. Right now i'm finally reading through the Typhon Pact/Cold Equations/The Fall section of the post-nemesis stuff.

Cast No Shadow by James Swallow got me through a rough Thanksgiving weekend recently. And Christopher Bennett's DTI novels got me through a couple of transcontinental plane flights.

If you want something fun, light, and self-contained, I would recommend some of Peter David's earlier novels. Imzadi and Q-Squared probably get the best reviews, but Q-In-Law, The Rift, & Captain's Daughter also fit the bill.

For the ultimate in fun & light, there's anything from the Shatnerverse. Ashes Of Eden and The Return are more stand-alone than the later books, such as the Mirror Universe trilogy. I consider Shatner's books to be sugar-sweet entertainment and I've quickly burned through several while on vacation.

You might want to check out How Much For Just The Planet? by John Ford.

Also Boogeymen was also a fun story that, I remember, had a scene where Captain Picard was taking orders from Wesley.

The Wounded Sky by Diane Duane or strangers from the Sky By Margaret Wander Bonnano.

Fun, light, self contained?

Doctor's Orders (TOS)
Q in Law (TNG)
Dragon's Honour (TNG)
Masks (TNG)
Objective: Bajor (DS9)

would be some good 'uns

To start the planning for Italy, we picked a time that worked for everybody’s vacation schedule. Then I asked each person what they’d like to see – we had a sister and brother-in-law, a new mom, dad and baby, grandma and grandpa, and a three-legged Turkish street dog in a mish-mash entourage I’d later dub 'Generation Holy Crap').

Half the crew had already visited the northern tourist circuit from Rome to Florence and across to Venice, but we were traveling during Christmas time. I figured a winter take on these classics would still hold plenty of interest. And just imagine Venice in the snow (enchanted, empty, everlasting and eternal).

Cast no Shadow is highly recommended if you are interested in Valeris background and what happened to her after the events in Undiscovered Country

Fire Ship (VOY)- One of the best Voyager novels written during the series.
No Time Like the Past (TOS)- A fun Voyager/TOS crossover.
The Sundered (Lost Era)- An Excelsior novel.
Vendetta (TNG)-Peter David's attempt at dealing with the Borg.
A Hard Rain (TNG)- A sort-of sequel to "The Big Goodbye", I enjoyed it but I've heard other people really hate it. It's silly and a bit contrived at points, but it's good Dixon Hill fun :)
By the Book (ENT)- Takes place during the first season. It's one of the funnest first contact stories ever. Plus there's a shipboard sub-plot that's really fun.

TNG #4: "Survivors" & giant size "Metamorphosis" by Jean Lorrah are fun taking a look back at early TNG and feature Tasha Yar :)

I'd say almost anything by Diane Duane, Jean Lorrah, Christopher Bennett, Greg Cox, or John Ford.

And I second Trek to Madworld.
