Due to scheduling conflicts with the people I was going to see it with we didn't get to see it until today. I really enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect or anything but for the first time since the reboot I actually felt like I was watching Star Trek. Not that I didn't like the other 2 but they were their own different (but still cool) thing. It's definitely my favorite of the three. Even the Beastie Boys scene (which was a little jarring) otherwise felt like your typical Star Trek solution. Only they'd probably use some frequency wave or something instead of Sabotage, but hey whatever. It was all in good fun. And seeing an Enterprise destroyed is always cool. Sometimes it's bittersweet but I don't feel all that attached to this particular ship. For a little while I wasn't really feeling the villains, they just felt like some generic baddies with a generic plan. But then they showed who they were and why they were doing this and I understood and thought it was pretty cool. Because I go spoiler-free for movies I had no clue that was Idris Elba until they revealed it near the end, so that was a cool surprise. The two people I saw it with also really enjoyed it and they're not Trek fans at all. I don't think they've ever seen a single episode or any of the movies before the reboot. And they just thought those were OK. All though the movie I was figuring they were probably hating it but afterward they were all excited and asking me a bunch of Star Trek questions. So it was cool to see them get excited about it.
Also I was a little surprised because I've been hearing about how Beyond is in some box office freefall but the theater was packed. It was one of those theaters that has the main section of seating and 3-4 separate rows right up front. The entire main area was full and there were some people in the front area. Like 30 more people and it would have been a sell out.
