Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

That is brilliant. Why on earth didn't they use it more widely?

I just came back from the movie. I thought it was a flawed, but very fun movie. And certainly the most Trek-y of all the reboots. The Red Letter Media also sums up the movie pretty well: it has yet another villain who wants revenge, yet another doomsday machine, yet another "save the Earth" plot (just sub in Earth for Yorkstown), but the characters, setting, mood, flow, etc. of it were very close to the original series. I thought the characters were much better: Kirk wasn't an asshole fratboy anymore, Bones got lots of screen time, the pointless Spock-Uhura romance was nixed. Since the Fast and Furious movies turned out being about family more than racing cars, I wonder if that's why they got Lin to direct this, because it really focused on the crew as a whole and their relationships and worked for that reason.

''The crew celebrates Kirk's birthday at Starbase Yorktown where the captain declines a promotion to assume command of the starbase, choosing to remain a starship captain. Spock, inspired by the adventures that Spock Prime had during his life with Starfleet, elects to remain with the crew and resumes his relationship with Uhura. Scotty presents Jaylah with an acceptance letter into Starfleet Academy, courtesy of a few strings pulled by Kirk. As Kirk and Spock look out of a massive window at the construction of a new Constitution-class starship, McCoy questions whether or not they really should go back out into space. A time-lapse sequence then shows the rapid construction and completion of the starship and its deployment into space. Its primary hull proudly displays the name and registry, USS Enterprise NCC-1701-A, and it seems clear that the mission of the Enterprise and its crew will continue''.

They are still a couple although if you blink an eye you will miss that part like me because even I myself did not catch on but this is star trek not sex and city where couple need to yell they are boyfriend/girlfriend again and if you re watch the whole film you will see they never actually completely broke up.

the villain wanted revenge again ...yes but at least it was better than using Khan in into darkness

From the trailer I thought they were going to go a bit more philosophical with the theme, with the line "This is where the frontier pushes back." Which I thought meant that there was an alien group or something that didn't appreciate the Federation trying to colonize everywhere and force their values onto other worlds/species (or they thought the federation were colonizing). But instead it was just a guy who wanted revenge.

they have another poster too

honestly they are better than the official one
the characters seem to be more 'alive' and as if something important is happening there. It's more interesting and looks more professional too, to be honest. And they put all the characters.

very 'Guardians'

Um... Not sure we watched the same movie.

I was talking about that in the grading thread too because someone there questioned the same thing

I'll just copy and paste what I wrote in the other thread because I'm lazy like that:

She's wearing his necklace and playing with it, she calls him 'old romantic' and he pretty much says he went to the party only to spend time with her. There is a both in text and in subtext intention (to imply they are a couple again) that is reinforced by the look Mccoy gives to them ('you gave your girlfriend a tracking device?') and then later when she brings him the drink and they look at each other in this kind of 'lovey dovey' way while the others are looking at the enterprise.

But the truth is, the moment the narrative provides context for the break up and you are told by Spock himself that they are separated only because he was thinking about leaving starfleet to help the vulcans, in the end it's kind of a simple assumption to make that as Spock stays he also reprises his relationship with her. There is no reason why he shouldn't do that especially when the love is obviously still there and the thing that was keeping them separated becomes a moot point. Unless, well, you think Spock hadn't actually decided to stay and he'll still leave them all.. but that seems to go against the resolution of his whole arc in the movie culminating with him looking at the picture of the old crew.

tl dr: they break up because he wanted to leave them all to help the vulcan but they obviously still love each other. In the end he decides his place is starfleet = they have no reason to stay broken up so they get back together. Simplicity.
It's star trek, not 2001: A Space Odyssey

Subtext? No way!
LMAO no subtext there, spock is hitting on her at the party and she replies by saying he is a good romantic for doing so or something like that.

no subtext there.

Bones just thinks the romance is not really romantic but quite creepy because he gave her a stalking device and she is still wearing it ......happily:shrug:

In VOY, the ship's computer is constantly monitoring the crew's brain activity. Given the contemporary culture use of technology to track everything and everybody, a tracking device does not seem out of place.

the look Bones gives to them (and her necklace) has some. I didn't see anyone mention the fact that S/U's break up never became 'official' and in fact, Bones is the only one who knew about it and he's the one who also notices them flirting in the end and knows what it means (in a way he's the one who saw the trouble in paradise AND then them being ok again). That is the subtext + the continued joke about Spock's gift to his girlfriend

Jaw droppingly gorgeous poster.

they have another poster too

Star Trek Beyond' Takes an Ethical Leap Forward

http://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-07-29/-star-trek-beyond-takes-an-ethical-leap-forward

If you’re looking for a diversion after two weeks of heavy convention viewing, I’d recommend a trip to the multiplex to see “Star Trek Beyond.” The reason isn’t just that the movie is by far the most fun of this summer’s tentpole offerings. The film is a paean to the value of diversity, and perhaps heralds the end of “speciesism” on the big screen.

A tracking device in the form of a necklace given to you by someone who you have romantic ties to for humans is kind of out of place. that is why jaylah, scotty, kirk and bones looked at spock in a weird way when Bines pointed out the reality of the situtaiton.

you gave your girlfriend a tracking device?
People, let's not start a 'shippy battle here on this thread, eh? ;)

right now I am worried about the future of nu trek . I hope we get a trek 4

Way to not understand the joke. It never occurred to Spock the necklace could be used in that fashion until that very moment. Hardly "out of place". It's situational humour, not interspecies stalking.

I give my significant others means of keeping track of them. Don't see the problem.

Also, why are you worried? The general reception has been positive.
