Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

The first reviews have been positive and the embargo is off tomorrow (Friday). If I wasn't already hyped for this movie I am now. Really looking forward to a week from now when I will be watching it in XD 3D with a friend. Then the week after if I love the movie I might see it again in regular format. Than I have something to talk about when I go to Vegas. This is the type of excitement I was wanting with the 50th anniversary. I just wish one of the networks did a version of "Adventure in Space and Time" for Trek in September as a bit of a special.

Gotta love this guy

One of the reasons for the writers creating Jaylah was the concern that Uhura was the only female member of the main cast, perhaps they could bring in Saavik earlier to replace Chekov? Maybe also make her half-Romulan, as that would certainly play off of Spock and Kirk too
I said this re Saavik. If they must use a pre-existing character, this is definitely the best option.

I reckon if they did a 4th movie, they should be brave and explore a cross over with the Mirror universe.

Let's face it, it'll be a take on Trek and if any team can pull it off, the current writing team can.

I instinctively react against the idea, and yet I can see it working. It would help to be on a larger scale than the original episode. How the hell would they end it, though?

Never got the love for Rand. Think I'd like to have a new female character with no baggage carry over from TOS.
Well we have only Uhura atm so why can't we have both? It's most as if the franchise swamps us with women!

As it looks like Jaylah is an awesome character, it'd be cool to keep her around for potential sequels.

if Jaylah decides to join starfleet she'll have to first go to the academy for 3/4 years before she can work on any ship, let alone the enterprise. So if they wanted to include her as part of the crew in trek 4, they'd have to set the movie in the second five years mission..

Which should not be a problem since we will probably get a new movie somewhen around 2019/2020.

Having read all the reactions to STB I can find, I get the feeling that if your favorite iteration of Trek is TNG, you probably won't LOVE this movie...

I love TNG and there are several moments in STB that reminded me very much of favourite civilian moments in TNG.

I wonder how the whole "there's no movie", is working out for those people who were spouting off about Abrams embezzling money from Into Darkness?

I was wondering about that last Thursday, as the movie was running in Sydney. I received several PMs about eight months ago that the entire movie was a hoax. Paramount was only pretending to make the film, and no script had been written, so nothing would ever be released, because they regretted giving Bad Robot the contract to make Trek movies, and were deliberately waiting out the agreement. :brickwall:

Not necessarily. Clever writers can always make up some work around. For example, the next movie could say that Starfleet has an "online education" program where cadets can stay on a Starship and take courses remotely. Then you could have Jaylah in a starfleet cadet uniform, serving on the Enterprise, while she takes her "online courses". Give her some throwaway lines like "I have to get back to my quarters to finish that subspace physics assignment that is due tomorrow". Voila. You can have her on the ship while explaining why she is in Starfleet so quickly.

Or you can just ignore the Academy entirely, since the next film likely won't arrive for another two-to-four years.

It's way past time for Star Trek to have a character in the main cast who ain't in the Space Navy nor interested in being in the Space Navy. So maybe Jaylah is that character.

"Oh, but then what's she doing on the ship?"

Who knows, who cares. "Clever writers can always make up some work around."
