Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Lin isn't in charge of making the trailers, though. Rarely do directors get a say in the trailers construction, as evidenced by Lin's own comments on trailer. He simply provided the material to the Marketing department and they took it from there.

Also, reshoots and edits are all a part of the process. LOTR and the Hobbit films were famous for their last minute edits, and the first Pirates of the Caribbean was incredibly short for a film of its scope in terms of production time.

None of this is new to Hollywood.

Question: Is it possible to make a Star Trek movie closer to TOS whilst being a critical and financial success? It arguably hasn't been done since The Voyage Home. I guess its a very tough thing to pitch, market and deliver given the current cinematic trends.

I must admit that I quite like Star Trek to be a niche product. To me thats part of the appeal.

It all depends on how much money the studio is willing to risk? There's no predicting these things. I saw Batman v Superman I thought that piece of sh*t would ruin WB's business, and it didn't. Captain America Civil War is 1,000,000 times better than BvS and I'm not sure if it will be a success or what???

Success and risk are definitely foremost on the studios mind? Money is a huge question for studios right now, which is one of the reasons I suspect why there is a limited amount of marketing right now. They will risk money but only so much and only at the time they deem is right.

And, as evidenced by many other films out there, word of mouth, especially by the Internet, is becoming very important, almost as much as other marketing efforts.

Funny how opinions differ. I just saw Civil War, and although I liked it I thought Batman v Superman was superior.

More of the same interview with John Cho, but with additional Justin Lin input.

********************

Justin Lin also recently discussed STAR TREK BEYOND in a new interview released via 1905 in which he revealed that despite his reputation as an "action director," he's putting the importance on character rather than action in STAR TREK BEYOND.

Well, it’s funny – I don’t know if I see myself as an ‘action director,’ you know. I think it’s my job as a filmmaker to make sure I bring something unique and different, you know, and “Star Trek” was a big part of my life growing up. I wanted to make sure that with all the choices that I have, I wanted to make sure that with this film, I can contribute something, hopefully, new to the franchise. You might think of “Star Trek” as a big film, but to me, it’s very much character-based. So that’s kind of the indie [director] in me – and also, not just my passion, but Simon [Pegg] and Doug [Jung] and everybody that’s been involved.

With a large cast which includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoë Saldana, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Simon Pegg, Idris Elba and Sofia Boutella, Lin found that the most challenging part of making STAR TREK BEYOND was making sure that everyone got a chance to shine.

The most challenging part, for me, was making sure that we don’t waste any frame of the film, because there’s a huge ensemble. I wanted to make sure that everybody – regardless of screen time – when you see them, that they exist for a reason and they have valid feelings and emotional connections to the audience… so after you see the movie, you feel like you actually have a great relationship with all these characters.

From the article:
Boutella’s screaming out for clean audio, which is the primary purpose of the automatic dialogue replacement (ADR) process – to replace on-set (or on-location) dialogue that was not cleanly recorded live at the time of performance.

This is an extremely common practice used by all forms of recorded media, and it’s nice to see director Justin Lin on hand to oversee even this small part of the BEYOND assembly.
ADR is a routine part of post-production for almost any movie, yet it will no doubt be pointed out in this instance as a clear indication of a "troubled" production. Almost as bad as reshoots, right?

My guess is that Batman v Superman put a bad taste in a lot of people's mouths, and it'll take some time for them to get over that experience. Most people don't care about which movie company was responsible for a film, or even consciously know the difference between DC and Marvel. Batman v Superman was just a "superhero movie" and so is Captain America: Civil War. That's all that really matters.

While it's true that most people don't notice nor care about production companies etc, I'd comfortably say that Marvel's promotion and marketing have established itself as it's own brand of movie. Marvel doesn't make superhero films: They make, produce and promote Marvel films - so heavily that it's hard to miss. So hard I doubt 'most people' get mixed up.

Frankly I think there is too much of a glut of comic book / superhero movies at the moment. I'm kind of over it and feeling meh at all the recent movie titles.

Has the perceived popularity of geek culture ruined original movies?

Nah, you're seeing that through the eyes of a fan. The average person doesn't pay any nevermind to that save for noticing it when it comes up on the big screen at the start of the movie. To them, a superhero movie is a superhero movie. Batman v Superman is exactly the same as Captain America: Civil War in the same way that any two rom coms, period pieces, or comedies are the same.

Since original movies are still being made, I'm going with no.
