Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

^^^^
There are some better views of the logo in the background of the video of the press conference from Dubai posted on Trekcore's site.

Especially since there only there for about two weeks, it's interesting that in the press conference, Urban and Yelchin both say they have some down time while they are there. Given others aren't there at all (stipulation: at least not yet) maybe much of what happens in Dubai revolves around Kirk, Spock, and Elba's character.

I didn´t see Zoe, Sofia, Lydia, Taslim and Cho there.

It's very possible Sulu and Uhura are off doing their own thing. I'm hopeful that's because they've got their own actual story arcs and this is more of an ensemble.

However, I can't help but notice that Chris Pine is there. I swear someone told me that the schedule for Beyond was "full of Pine's conflicts" and that he would be shooting Wonder Woman in September.

Then again, this is the same group who told me a new Star Trek TV series would be announced this past January and that Beyond had no budget when production started so it could only be a "fan film," so... :p

Or they are 'left home' like in the old movies, back to the super exciting days where everything was the kirk(and spock and mccoy) show and new characters got more action than the existing characters like Uhura and Sulu..

I guess the omaze videos do hint the groups in the movie and don't get me wrong, I'm ok with Sulu and Uhura doing their own thing in the plot and interacting but if they leave her to interact with Sulu only as an excuse to change the spock/uhura/kirk dynamic and keep her out of the main action and away from the main characters ..well that is not good for me.

But I know, my (and many Uhura fans I see) concerns about Pegg and his bias for the 'bros' influencing the way he develops Uhura are completely unfounded and irrational hate..
The fact that you have a whole press conference in Dubai and their female lead is not here (nor we see any of the other actresses) is just a coincidence.

If Saldana is not in every scene, then obviously this is the Trek movie where Pegg kills off Uhura. :p
Seriously, it's two weeks out of a three to four month shoot, and from the cast talk of downtime I suspect it's mostly crowd scenes. Don't read too much into it.

Saldana just wrapped from Vancouver 7 days ago, and she had her babies with her, so maybe she just asked to have a break and not travel. Do not know where she would have flown from, but my flight to Dubai/Abu Dhabi from Chicago is 15 hours, and even in Business, it is a loooooong flight.

Pegg says he tried to get hold of Orcis script but couldn't http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/star-trek-beyond-simon-pegg-828301

Interesting bit from Pegg in that article, as he discusses his worries over writing after being
"But actually it’s been the opposite of that. The cast has all been collaborating with Doug and I in a way that we can never begin to thank them for. Each and every one of them has brought things to the script that we will take full credit for and will never, ever admit that it was their idea."

This is why I was not concerned about Pegg writing, not for Uhura and Spock, or any other character. There is a collaborative atmosphere that I think was foster by their cast relationship and Lin's directing style.

If Uhura isn't in the scenes featuring the "Dubai Planet" - like, say, she's manning her station on the bridge at that point in the story - then the actor who plays her won't travel with the production to Dubai.

It is that simple. The fact itself tells you absolutely nothing about the importance of the character to the story.

Pegg's a brilliant guy, the best that a movie like Star Trek could hope to get. I'm not worried in any way by his having this assignment - quite the contrary, it's got me more excited than ever about the film.

For all we know, Uhura could still figure in the scenes to be filmed in Dubai. Perhaps she and Sulu are supposed to be at their bridge stations, communicating/coordinating with Kirk & landing party on the surface of whichever planet Dubai is playing.

Edit: Ninja'd by Dennis.

I'd rather think it makes more sense for their communications officer and linguist to visit the planet, than take with you scotty, chekov and mccoy?
But that's me..

It's not just me, though, who is finding it weird that there is no woman at that press conference. Zoe, Boutella, Lydia.
There are article talking about a 'boys's club'. You should also see the things people were telling Zoe over twitter yesterday... (She is one of the most popular actors in this reboot so it's not surprising that people get defensive)
I dunno, you guys don't think it's at least a tiny bit weird that it really is all guys there?

I get we are used to see trek as a boys' club, but really...

Or, considering this is the Middle East, it could simply be a matter of them respecting, er... local cultural sensibilities.

The Mideast is no more culturally monolithic than any other region in the world. Dubai and the UAE are one of the more progressive parts of the Mideast where women's rights are concerned, though that's relative (and it applies more to citizens than migrant workers, because Dubai's treatment of migrant workers as a whole is a human-rights nightmare). It's certainly not as if women aren't allowed in public or something; as long you don't go around in a tank top and shorts or get publicly drunk and rowdy, you're fine.

Sets in Pitt River Quarries, Canada.

Thanks for this. The big yellow-orange construction amid the blue rocks is the most intriguing element. Those red things look like they might be digging implements.

The damaged ship interiors are cool, but there's no evidence they are the Enterprise. As analysis of the external saucer set has shown, this is probably a different ship.

It occurs to me, we haven't yet seen the crew's quarters, not even the captain's. Could this be the movie where we first glimpse NuKirk's space-age bachelor pad?

Just so.

They start filming today at Media City in Dubai, as well as some other locations. For those of you who have not had a chance to travel here, Dubai looks like what Trantor must have looked like in its early years. My paper confirmed Dubai will double as "Alien City" no surprise there!*

Man, who knew this Chicago Hometown Boy would end up in the place where they filmed a "Mission: Impossible", a couple of Star Treks and A Star Wars movie. Funny how things go, sometimes.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Shooting has begun in Dubai on "Star Trek Beyond," the third film in the reboot of the science-fiction series.
Authorities in Dubai shut down busy Sheikh Zayed Road from 6 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday for the shoot. A helicopter filmed along the road, lined with tall buildings and the Dubai Metro.
Actors involved in "Star Trek Beyond," directed by Justin Lin, arrived in Dubai several days ago. The film is set for release in July.
Dubai's Burj Khalifa skyscraper played a starring role in 2011's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol." J.J. Abrams, who helmed the last two "Star Trek" films, shot parts of the upcoming "Star Wars: Episode VII" in Abu Dhabi. The city was also a location for the most recent "Fast & Furious" movie installment.

Shall we begin? :techman:

Zach Quinto left Dubai after visiting the tallest building. He is in the Seychelles with Miles.

Meanwhile, Chris Pine in Dubai.
