It looks like exactly the same patch to me. It's just the lighting on the one on the STID uniform doesn't show the texture as well.
Don't know if it would be a space suit, as the fabric has a denim or canvas texture to it. Strikes me as more rugged and outdoorsy looking than something that's supposed to be a space suit. Upstream, I'm on record believing the patch is on something other than a uniform (or maybe as Devon said, if it is a uniform, it's draped over something).

You know, while it's kind of cool that they have a bunch of uniforms in Starfleet, there sure are a LOT of them. I'm surprised there aren't different uniforms for different departments. Perhaps there are for different ships? Or a uniform to walk down the hall? And one for sitting? One for standing? 
Seriously though, will we see the wraparound variant in Beyond? Casual uniforms? Away team uniforms? So many questions from that patch... just about uniforms.

Your comments remind me of a snippet of a review of TMP I read way back when it was released that commented negatively on the number of uniform changes Kirk made throughout the film.
Have you noticed frayed edges on fabric?
Would it be a old uniform? A missing ship?

A less than pristine look is probably just in line with the look Abrams wanted in the first two movies. That is, that things actually look like they've been used.

I actually love that there are tons of uniforms and I seriously wouldn't mind seeing a few more. It's also something I enjoyed about TMP.

I actually love that there are tons of uniforms and I seriously wouldn't mind seeing a few more. It's also something I enjoyed about TMP.
I think budgets and the nature of producing TV shows precluded different uniform types in TOS. Even still, in "The Cage" and early season one episodes in particular, there was variance in types of on-ship uniforms (at least in the background characters), and Pike's landing party actually wore jackets, something not duplicated until TMP (I think).
It would certain be more realistic to have "uniforms of the day," at least for officers, and operation-specific uniforms. A nice touch.
I can go either way on Carol Marcus. I don't want them to cram her into the story just because. If there's a reason for her to be there, I'm all in. If there isn't, I don't need her to be there.
It wouldn't necessarily be his decision. Writers have essentially no power in feature films, unless they're also directing and/or producing. And sometimes actors just aren't available because of other commitments, or because the studio won't agree to their agents' contract terms, or whatever.
Besides, STID was criticized for riding too heavily on continuity nods like Carol, Khan, "Ship... out of danger," etc. This time, it sounds like they're trying to go in the other direction and do something more original and less dependent on the past (or at least that's my vague impression). So that could be a reason for dropping Carol.
According to some friends of mine in Vancouver, apparently one of the main cast was on the set in the park.
At least, on Monday, CPine was seen in a restaurant in Alaska, after the night he was seen with Cho and Yelchin in Vancouver, Zoe was with her family, Zach was in NY and it appears that he returned yesterday to Vancouver and Karl Urban was in LA with his girlfriend, on Sunday.

Currently, according to IMDB (I know), Eve is listed for a movie called Beyond Deceit which is currently filming although according to my handy-dandy IMDB Prosubscription trial (I know), filming started at the end of March. Eve could very well be wrapped on this. The next entry listed is Please Stand By her next project in pre-production which only started pre-production in May.
I suppose there is nothing to worry about until we see an official cast list. She would have time to film an Into Darkness size role at this juncture.
