Spoilers Star Trek: Beyond - SCOTTY'S PHOTON TUBE

Believer Bob

Lieutenant

Upon rewatching Beyond, a likely reference to Into Darkness became apparent:

Scotty escapes the swarm's attack on the Enterprise by evacuating in a photon torpedo. Inside the torpedo, we see Scotty wearing an oxygen mask. I doubt that photon torpedos are equipped with any sort've life support - and equally doubt that Scotty had time to rig something up. Almost without a doubt, this is a leftover torpedo from Kahn's crew. (Perhaps the ONLY left over torpedo, as Kahn was the only one awakened and presumably all the rest of the torpedos were used in the attack on Admiral Marcus' ship...)

What do you think?

Well, we have seen photon torpedos (or at least their shells) used as a means for one-person transport before in Trek, so I'm not sure it has to be one of the torpedos by Khan.

Maybe I'm misremembering, but I think in TNG's “The Emissary” K'Ehleyr was arriving in what looks like a photon torpedo tube. And wouldn't Sito Jaxa in “Lower Decks” also have returned to the Enterprise in such a tube? But yeah, everytime we see a photon torpedo tube used as a space coffin, it more or less shows that they are capable of transporting a humanoid body.

It is called a Class VIII probe in "Emissary". But it is the photon casing we see Spock sent to Genesis in.

The casing in Scotty's Beyond torpedo is very similar, if not identical, to the casings of Kahn's Into Darkness torpedoes...

It was established in TNG that Starfleet will utilize photon torpedo casings modified with life support technology to serve as high speed delivery systems.

Sito Jaxa was supposed to use an escape pod hidden in the shuttle.

It was an ID reference in as much as it was one of the broadside torpedo launchers from ID. I did think of Khan's crew, but as others have said, Next Gen did something very similar first.

Not every event that seems similar to something from a previous movie/episode is a 'nod' or 'reference'....
