Spoilers Star Trek Beyond references

So that publicity photo is now canon.

Someone tell Memory-Alpha

Though this isn't the first time, Admiral Janeway gave Tuvok a publicity photo in Endgame haha

This is the photo

This is where I started to tear up.

Same here. The Enterprise era stuff and other references were awesome, but I was not expecting such a nod to the original cast. When Spock opened the box of Ambassador Spock's belongings I was expecting a shot or holovid of old Spock from the Kelvin timeline, and honestly that would have been a good tribute and reminder. I was hoping at most for that proposed and discarded happy birthday recording of Shatner from the 2009 movie. It just blew me away that there was a pic of the entire TOS movie era main cast. It was perfect.

Yep. AndyPandy and Danlav05 nailed the photo.
More TOS references in the movie:

Came from Thasus ("Charlie X").

was Finnegan, from "Shore Leave", according to the credits.

David Marcus framed pic in ST VI.

Yep. AndyPandy and Danlav05 nailed the TOS pic earlier in this thread. Greg Grunberg was Finnegan? Holy crap, that's awesome.

I know most of this thread is about continuity an easter eggs, but I just have to ask. Did anyone wonder, after the Franklin breached the canal in Yorktown and then bellyflopped, why all the surrounding pavement was bone dry? I was waiting for a huge splash, and ... nothing. What a wasted opportunity for a great effect.

Firstly, Commodore Paris was a reference to the woman he was talking to about turning down the Vice Admiralty (or so I assumed). So I don't think that's a voyager reference.

Why not?

When going through the nebula, after coming out the music is very close to that played during TMP, when they are entering V'Ger

I thought the shaft Scotty was climbing up in the Franklin looked like the infamous "78" deck shaft from the Final Frontier!

I posted elsewhere in my initial review that I got a real TMP/V'ger/Goldsmith vibe from the nebula sequence. Glad to see someone else did. One of things I really liked about film.

Also VOY episode: The Swarm ;)

Oh man, TMP is, together with TUC, my fave TOS movie. To hear that very similair theme..... Goosebumps! :D

I noticed that but was immediately struck that the sounds in the nebula were very similar to if not the same as the the storm-like sounds when they approached V'ger on foot.

On the "Easter egg" front, what this movie got right and STID got wrong is that these touches were largely in the periphery and background. They were like seasoning. whereas in my opinion STID "went big" and felt too-clever-by-half in trying to put some of them front and center and relying on memes and "best of" scenes at the expense of its own emotional core.

True, in Beyond, bits like the birthday toast may have seemed on-the-nose to some, but for me these instances were more tasteful and were integrated smoothly into character moments that were already pretty well developed in their own right.m so it added to the poignancy instead of overriding it.
