Star Trek Beyond pays homage to TOS

I recently saw the scene on youtube and I found it very much too much. He bit in it after every sentence (this is an expression of how I felt it, don't take it too literally).

In Star Trek II Kirk ate that apple because he was in that hall of creation - big Bible metaphore here -. But the apples were just lying around . Also the apple shows, how laissez faire and experienced he is, which then connects to the end and Spock's death.

In Star Trek 9 the apple thing works in a different way as a metaphore for cockiness. But here the apple doesn't come natural and I said it before: he bit after every sentence in it, that's just too much, a bit too hyperactive. I had thought back then in the cinema: "yes, thank you, I have already understood it!" ;)

The apple is the callback, not how many times he bites into it. Still only one reference.

Look at it as nervous eating, wondering if he's going to actually pull this off, while staying (mostly) cool on the outside.

Why was he nervous if he'd manipulated the whole thing? Why does he have an apple in a simulated battle situation? Is that standard procedure with Starfleet? I had the impression that it was mocking his teachers and cockiness to bring this apple. Anyway, the scene doesn't work for me but I'm not a fan of JJTrek.

Jesus...

Only Star Trek fans would have a discussion analyzing how and why a certain character eats an apple.
To quote Cinema Sins, "The director said let's have you eat an apple; it will make you look like more of an asshole." In this case, it really works. Kirk comes off as a cocky know-it-all who is sticking it to the "no-win scenario" in the most dickish way possible.

Also, I liked EC Henry's (a YouTube creator) who noted a variety of different references that Trek 09 and STID, such as subtle nods to Spock's emotional connection to the deaths of Vulcans, Uhura's infatuation with Spock, and those are off the top of my head.

Finally, Spock's "KHAN!" was the most cringeworthy homage? O_o

IMO yeah.

So they have no new ideas and have decided to repackage everything that was done before, did STID tell them nothing?

this is my worst fear coming to pass. Abrams has said he made mistakes in STID surely it must have taught them something.

Well, the spock/bones banter is itself a big 'homage', and so is the fact that so far it seems the movie is a white dudes fest (listening to Pegg it also seems Scotty is the third lead here) where the only kind of relationships with narrative importance are the friendships between males. Also as an attempt to pay homage to Nichols and the amazing 60s, Uhura's more contemporany and improved role in the trio dynamic seems to be toned down and she is downgraded.

It seems to me, the vibe I get from the last interviews, that this team is trying to preach about being better than the previous one and not do the mistakes they think stid did, except they ultimately do the same. They also keep saying what they think TOS fans want to hear. I loved Pine's honesty when he got asked about the trailer and Pegg's faux negative reaction about it ..he was like, well the trailer isn't exactly lying about the tone of the movie.

It sounds funny to say this but star trek tos is the worst enemy of this trek and any possible 'new' trek anyone will want to add. If I sound bitter it's because I'm. When I watched the first movie I loved it and it gave me hope, I thought trek wasn't dead and I was looking forward to see more of these characters and excited about the potential of new stories and see them in new dynamics. But it's hopeless because we're stuck in the 60s.
The new successful star wars gave people a female lead and hero and two supporting characters who are poc. What will trek give to people and this generation?
