The Politics of Star Trek

Justice, War, and the Future

George A. Gonzalez
The Politics of Star Trek
Hardcover (232 pages)

The Star Trek franchise reflects, conveys, and comments upon the key philosophical tensions of the modern era: pragmatism vs. justice; universalism vs. traditionalism; empire vs. consensual polity; environmentalism vs. modernity. George A. Gonzalez details the manner in which these tensions and controversies are manifested in Star Trek across its iterations, and in so doing argues that Star Trek offers an indispensable intellectual and analytical contribution to our understanding of the politics of the modern era.

Voyager, the Intrepid Class Starship, went through many phases, both as physical models and CG. An interesting fact regarding one of the physical models is that a small scale model of Voyager was constructed by Rick Sternbach, modifying a "Revell-Monogram" model kit. It was never used for filming (nor was any other physical model ever used as stand-in for the studio model for that matter) and was later auctioned off as Lot 225 in Profiles in History's "Hollywood Auction 24" on March 31st, 2006, estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

Damn! You are the MC for the new show "Trek Countdown Trivia Challenge"!
It comes with a snazzy jacket, a command chair for you to Host and proctor from, and a "Red Alert" klaxon button for your very much discretionary use! Wow!!! As you have yet to select a show Announcer, respectfully, I would like to submit my candidacy. Should you desire, I can provide character references!

Ok, back to the 'Down

In the book, Star Trek Visions of Law and Justice, by By Robert H. Chaires, Bradley Stewart Chilton, page 224 starts a very interesting section on "The Dark Side" of Star Trek, using The questioning of Data's sentience - he being a machine made by a man, and TOS episode, "Let This Be Your Last Battlefield" as example and metaphor of "...respecting individual and racial dignity and autonomy."

This one is a "keeper" and worth your time to investigate, JF. Do not know if you are a "Reader", but check this one out! More evidence of how worthy this game we are playing turns out to be, and further example of Star Trek on the Culture!!!

That's, LORD Announcer! ;) Thank you very much, but quit that. It's nothing. Your additions are much more interesting and more deeply researched than mine.

"Room 222" was a TV show I loved, that started the year Star Trek ended. It was the first show I can remember noticing actors and writers in the credits, that were the same for "Star Trek"!

Who remembers "222 Glover Avenue" (and who had to wait in the car on arriving there)?

Holy Recall, M'Sharak! One of the Classic BatClimbs, if memory serves...always one of my favorites. I remember it was a "Riddler" episode, but I do not remember who had to wait in the car.
