Star Trek as seen in Gold Key?

OK, I've always had a soft spot for the Gold Key Star Trek comics. For some reason, the way they depicted Star Trek had some kind of pull to me.

Last night, while reading through my copy of "The Enterprise Logs, Volume 1", I was wondering what it would be like to try and make a film, but depict Trek as it is in those comics.

You could try to get permission from an historic naval ship, WWII era and forward, preferably, for some of the interiors, and the props would be...interesting to see live.

What do you think?

I think it'd be good fun. I loved the Gold Key comics because they had such an interesting and pulpish take on Star Trek.

With all this NuTrek stuff going on, i've been wallowing in the retro. Just bought the first five volumes of the collected Gold Keys for less than $30. (Would've been less than $20 if I hadn't bought the first volume new off the local comic shop shelves.)
I didn't care for them when they first came out, but I've been having a wonderful time rereading them.

I'd get a giggle out of seeing those rocket flames coming out of the nacelles. I don't know. I'm sort of picturing something between Cawley and crew's New Voyages/Phase II and H.R. Puff'n'Stuff.

I've got the Gold Keys on CD. In one of the early issues, Kirk actually uses the ship's periscope.

Some things I like in them are things like the Teleporter area (which in one issue had McCoy as the operator!), they used backpacks, how the Enterprise had to go into the atmosphere to get a looksee at the planet, one where Spock is threading up film to watch about a planet, I could go on.

But, I just love the take on Trek those comics had! I've gotta see if I can do this in some way, it would be cool!

Ya gotta keep that! It's part of the fun like when Superman used to say "Great Krypton!" Or when Wonder Woman would exclaim, "Great Hera!"

Those comics treat Star Trek as if it were a 30s children's science-fiction serial and I love it.

I loved the Gold Key version of Trek, back before they started trying to get the details right. It was like they mixed Trek with Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. Scotty was blonde for a long time too. The uniform shirts seldom had insignia and only Spock wore blue; everyone else wore green. Kirk was a really cranky, demanding SOB too. Maybe it's because he was forced to talk to the ship through his tricorder and he was often the only person to carry one on landing missions.

I'd love to see an episode where The Enterprise uses full rocket speed to get to planet Numero Uno, where Kirk reacts in surprise when the leaders (Justin I and Justin II) speak in the interplanetary language "Esperanta."

This site, BTW, is essential in getting the full appreciation of the Gold Key comics.

I love the line about wiping the pipes! And that site you linked to is a recent discovery I made online, and it is wonderful! It really is exhaustive, right down to the spaceships seen throughout the series!

And I thought again after I posted about toning down the exclamations. You're right, I have to leave those in, middy!

I'm going to have to work out a way to start making this. I live near a couple of Navy ships that would have the right interiors (the Battleship USS New Jersey and the submarine USS Becuna) for some of the Enterprise.

But, there would have to be casting, wardrobe, someone to do some effects (for the Enterprise firing up her rockets), and so on.

I think this would be very cool!

It's an astute observation that nuTrek has a lot of commonalities with the Gold Key comics, and I'll add the Power Record albums to that. Variations on a theme.

The beauty of Star Trek, especially TOS, is that it can have different interpretations like nuTrek, the Gold Key comics, and the Power Record albums.

My enjoyment of all of those various interpretations, like all the variations of Superman, don't diminish my appreciation for the source material. It only enhances it. Like a microbrew that compliments a well-made burger.

Absolutely, it's an amazing site. Gold Key Trek is so bizzare, but cool at the same time.

The battleship Massachusetts in Fall River, MA would be amazing. It's open to Boy Scouting trips and overnight stays in the bunkrooms. They have a lot of it open to the public.

I've not read many of the Gold Key comics, in fact looking at this thread again has persuaded to me to go and look at one.


A couple of years ago there was a fan film in development called 'The Constellation Project'. This was pitched as a Trek movie in the style of a 1950s sci-fi (B-?)movie. This idea could revive the stylisstic idea, and could be fun

How to do go about it logistically, who knows?! Wher to get a ship? What story to tell - maybe adapt one of the comics?

If anything it would be simply something different.

Hey, maybe we could pitch it to The Asylum (removing the obvious Trek branding of course!) as a mockbuster alongside Trek 12? Or not...

I love those old books. And the back story for Kirk that was put into the Star Trek Logs volume served as continuity to me before the novels...
