When I say as an "escape to the past," I mean to the era in which the film/show was made, not some garble-dy time travel to the Wild West.

The show is meant to bring the audience into the future, but as the shows age, they can have the opposite effect.

Personally, the TOS crew movies are nostalgic. Brings me back to my childhood and simpler times.

Ahhh, the memories....

The next generation is really nostalgic for me. I remember I began watching it around 1994/1995 I was about 11/12. It brings back a lot of memories.

To a much lesser extent deep space nine and voyager bring back memories was I started watching those when they first ran.

Both for me, though I had never really thought of it that way before.

Watching TNG takes me back to about 1987/8 when the first few episodes of the first season were released on VHS rental in my local video shop. My dad and I used to rent them, and I scraped together my pocket money to help out with cost.

TNG does sometimes take me back to memories of my childhood when I'm watching it, but rather sadly, I now find TNG more of a comfort blanket than anything else. Guess I just don't like adult life very much. :(

I suppose I watch Star Trek to escape the present, which is probably better than alcohol or drugs.

Sometimes, watching TOS, I can recall how it felt to lay down on the old shag carpeting we had and peer up at our 19" tv to see Kirk and Co. in action.

Both, A few months ago, I heard that the ISS and the Space Shuttle were going to be visible for a couple of minutes. The shuttle had seperated a few hours earlier and was still pretty close to the ISS, seeing those two dots over head, got me thinking how cool it would be to press my com badge and say "One to beam Up". Mabey in the future that will be possible, for now, however, I will have to settle for Trek doing all the beaming up for me...

Resistance is Futile

Just to escape. I only saw two or three episodes of Enterprise before buying it on DVD. I bought all 4 seasons of Enterprise right before my father got very sick. For 6 months I sit with him every night and frequently watched episodes on either laptop or and iPod. I saw every episode at least twice during that time and it was a very good and necessary escape. I think that is why I am so defensive when people criticize the series. A few months after he died I went to my first and only ST conventions, Vegas08. It was strange seeing so many of the actors that played in that series. But, it was nice meeting people on the forum that I had come to know over the past year. I guess that was another forum of escape.

both.

Trek has a special place in my heart. when I first came to the USA as a teenager, I left behind close friends, familiar surroundings, and a beloved extended family I was very close to. Star Trek somehow filled some of that space in my soul. even now, watching Trek gives me an immense feeling of peace and completion and belonging.

I realize it always has.
