Star Trek 50th Anniversary Tribute Game

GambitRealm

Hi all,

Some of you may remember our game project from a few years ago - we built the entire original series Enterprise in the Torque game engine, and you could explore the whole ship and also have fun flying a shuttle around outside...

Well, we have some exciting news!

We are getting ready to release an updated version, just in time for the 50th Anniversary of Star Trek, and we have really tried to take things to the next level this time.

Some of the exciting new features now in the game:

- 15 training missions (Gold/Red/Blue shirts each get 5 skill tiers)
- 5 interactive episodes (watch clips and then take control of the action)
- All Decks exploration mission (entire ship accessible)
- Turbolift Shafts exploration mission (go from top to bottom of ship within the shafts)
- Deck 6 movie theater mission (watch movie trailers in the theater)

- Full Oculus Rift support (DK1 tested - don't own a DK2 so can't vouch for that)
- Full game controller support (I even got my PS3 controller to work on my PC, thinks it's an Xbox controller)
- Each mission completed unlocks a new character to play
- Unlocked characters can access specific things in the All Decks mission
- Each skill tier of missions completed unlocks an interactive episode

- We can now fly the actual Enterprise just like we fly a shuttle
- We can beam to and from planets and space stations
- Ship can warp to other locations, and you see the planets approaching

Single player only for now, but we also have a whole multiplayer angle in mind should we ever get the energy to go there... We'll see.

This will be a completely free download, meant as a tribute giveaway to Star Trek fans of all ages. We will also be including the Torque tools and some editable scripts, to allow anyone to mod this anyway they like... It's our gift to the Trek community in celebration of the 50th anniversary.

CBS/Paramount never made a game anything like this, so we did it :)

Anyhow, here are some pics to tide you over until release day... These are the mission preview images, taken from in-game screenshots.

We are aiming for a March/April release - stay tuned!

Beta testing copy is available right now - PM me for details if you are interested.

Live Long and Prosper

Cheers
Paul

This looks quite impressive. I love the setting of TOS the most out of all Trek.

I remember spotting your original project forever ago, but was unable to try it due to being on a Mac and not having a working Windows box handy. Glad to see this being updated even further with some great TOS content!

How tied to Torque are you? With modern engines like Unity and Unreal, this set would look amaze-balls.

Thanks for the replies :)

We are actually pretty firmly in Torque's corner... It seems to get a lot of flack, but you know we tried everything, several times over the years, and these other engines talk a big game but you just can't hit the ground running like you can with Torque.

The quick art pipeline, simple development environment, low overhead, a directory structure you can actually understand, a scripting system that makes sense and is as easy to learn as PHP, the fact that it is 100% royalty free open source with 10 years of resources and extra code available, customizable C+ engine, I could go on.

Yeah Unity, Unreal, oooooh pretty... Have you actually produced anything with that? It is not intuitive at all. Torque rocks, always has, I'll always stand by it :)

That being said, I have to agree that Unreal is gorgeous, I cannot argue with that.

We did get the hull and the bridge into Unreal. But could not get anywhere with the scripting and actual game building like we could with Torque, so we ended up back there like always lol

We want to explore baking lightmaps and such to improve the look of it, it is just difficult to do that with the ship for various reasons.

I've actually released an iOS game using Unity. Once you get past the learning curve, I found it super easy to use, but you're totally justified in using what works best for you. I was just asking is all.

In any case, do you have the capability to publish for OS X, and if so, do you have any plans to do so?

Technically with Torque, capability is there to go to Linux now, and I think a group has been working on and off for years on an OSX port, so there is hope :) But nothing yet sadly.

A buddy of mine also does Unity stuff for iOS, hobby only so far, I've seen it and it's cool, I just don't know how to scale it up to do what we are doing. I've played with it, same with Unreal. But yeah, something about Torque has always clicked with me. Maybe it's the underdog thing lol.

Cheers

Time for an update...

WE NOW HAVE A COMPLETE WORKING TURBOLIFT SYSTEM!

Yes, you can now ride the lifts from anywhere to anywhere, and even explore the entire shaft network on foot.

As far as I know, we're the only people to ever actually map out the entire lift network in 3D (horizontal and vertical) and be able to traverse it at will :)

Also, lots of clips available in the Deck 6 theater now - including complete episodes of Star Trek Continues, who have graciously allowed us to use their content in-game.

You should have had a sandbox mode where you can just wander around all over the ship not tied to any missions at all, but this is impressive. Hey that officer in the picture for medical training looks like she's about to have a baby. Just that pose on the bed.

Hehe, yeah you're right, she does kind of look like that :)

The sickbay patients will all pick a random death animation when they spawn, and then they fall on the bed in that pose. We have 19 death animations in all, so you never know what you're going to see when you arrive in sickbay, lol.

For the sandbox idea you are talking about, there is an Explore All Decks mission there which is just that - no goals or anything, you can wander the whole ship and go anywhere and do whatever you want.

When you first load up, the current campaign mission is selected by default (there are 5 missions in each of the 3 mini-campaigns - gold shirt, red shirt, and blue shirt), but you can click the MAP button and choose from other missions/levels as well. There is a separate one for the movie theater for example, where you spawn right there and everything is smooth because the rest of the ship is not loaded. There are also other small standalone levels like the Turboshaft exploration (where the hull is transparent for a neat effect), and the deck 8 and deck 20 recreation areas which are fun to explore.

Give it a shot, let me know what you think.

Cheers
Paul
