Star Trek - $5.61 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million Worldwide

Re: Star Trek - $5.61 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million World

I just returned from the Friday 7 p.m. IMAX show, and the theater was packed like last Friday. The only difference was we didn't have to stand in line. There seemed to be a lot of younger people there.

I am going to be sorry when it leaves the IMAX; we've seen it twice each weekend in IMAX. ST XI just gets better with each viewing.

So funny about Tom Hanks... twice mentioning Star Trek on The Daily Show.

Why would Jon Stewart have Jackman and Hanks on, and ignore Trek completely? Could've gotten Nimoy, I'm sure.

Damn, you, Stewart!

Anybody return from another sold out showing? I just did.

Me too. 9pm showing. Sold out. I couldn't get that good of a seat at 10 minutes til.

It was actually more crowded than when I went last Saturday.

Really? Hm. I better get those tickets for Friday night's 7 PM showing in the afternoon instead. I'm taking a few friends to see it.

J.

I'm a bit surprised at that... Oh well, his loss.

As for the sold out IMAXes--YES!

Re: Star Trek - $5.61 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million World

My mom wanted to see it again today, so we caught the first showing at 1:20 pm (Angels and Demons started at noon, and was on four screens -Trek was only on two) and there were more people than I expected. I'd say the theater was about half full, which was pretty good considering the time. Most people don't pack the theater here until about 7 pm. I don't know if it's going to top A&D at the box office this weekend, but I suspect it's going to make some good money.

That's not the reason, is it? I mean, did Jon really not have any of the cast on?

i went to see angels and demons.and while at the theatre slipped in for a couple of minutes of trek.
it appeared both movies had the same amount of people.

I didn't see them come on and I'm a pretty regular watcher of the Daily/Colbert hour. I have no idea if he is a Star Wars fan I was just creating disinformation. You would think he would like Star Trek with how liberal he is.

I'm a regular viewer as well and you're right, so far no one from the new movie has been on. But Jon is a big Star Wars fan (as is Stephen) and he mentions it fairly often. No idea if he likes Star Trek or not, but I always figured he did because he never indicated otherwise.

Re: Star Trek - $5.61 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million World

Well, thanks; that is odd. He usually gets all the big opening movie casts.

Colbert had a hysterical bit with JJ Abrams. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/226698/may-04-2009/j-j--abrams

Re: Star Trek - $5.61 million on Thursday - Crosses $150 Million World

Oh and to keep this into perspective at a US domestic of 104 million we have passed the adjusted for inflation totals of Nemesis, and Final Frontier, teh first two showings on Friday should be enough to pass Insurrection. By this Sunday we will also pass Undiscovered Country and Generations with a possibility of passing First Contact.

With a 153 million total for our World Wide gross we have passed the adjusted gWW gross of Nemesis, Final Frontier. By Sunday we will pass Undiscovered Country, Insurrection, Search for Spock and possible Generations.

As for the profitability of this film, paramount isn't strictly looking at that. They see this film as a chance to restart teh Trek franchise, and consider the number of people in the theater more important then profit on this film. With the thought (if it doesn't generate a profit) that it should build for its sequel.

But it doesn't look like that is going to be a huge problem.

The broadcast rights (if it hasn't been mentioned) were sold for 24 or 26 million. Unlike movie tickets or even DVD sales every dollar of that can go to the cost of the film.
