Star Trek 3: Revenge Of Kirk

Beam Brain

Ensign
Newbie
This is my first post so if I mess up Starfleet protocol you can court throw me in the brig. Aftre going back and watching all the TOS movies I see so many holes you could drive as train through.

On this movie I have always wondered why Kirk being a master strategist would transport to the surface of Genesis knowing it was destroying itself when he could have made it easier on himself by choosing a different location?

Consider The Facts:
- Kirk asked Sulu what the compliment of the Bird Of Prey was. Sulu: "A dozen officers & men." Kirk: "With some of them on the surface."
- Kruge had said that he was surprised the Enterprise hadn't "finished me off!. They outnumber me 10 to 1." While he was referring to was weaponry he also knew that the Enterprise normally had hundreds of people on board.
- Torg argued with Kruge that they were outnumbered before going over to Enterprise. Kruge knew he had the upper hand so he rationalized they would do his bidding.
- Kirk would have to know Kruge would be sending almost all the rest of his men over.

So...... based on those facts, when they transported off Enterprise and Kruge's guys arrived, why didn't Kirk choose the location of transport to be....... wait for it....... The Bird Of Prey? Maltz would have never expected to see them appear and they could have easily had their phasers drawn and taken him down and surprised Kruge before he could contact the surface. Then Kirk could have just transported Spock and Saavik aboard the ship and left those Klingons on the surface to be fried. Title of the movie: Revenge Of Kirk

Kirk doesn't know the disposition of Kruge's forces. There could be two people on the ship or ten.

The Klingons know their own ship. It's defensible. They'll also know they've been boarded immediately. Kruge can, within seconds, recall the boarding party, and order his people on the ground to kill the hostages. The transporter effect takes time, and they would've been alert for treachery ("No tricks, Kirk!"). Kruge and Maltz could've retaliated before the Starfleeters were done materializing.

By beaming to the planet, the Enterprise crew remains hidden, since there's no reason to think all 400 of them aren't still on the ship, so Kirk's plan to destroy the ship and cut down the odds against them hast time to work before Kruge figures out what his game is. They can scout the area and rescue the hostages, then draw any remaining crew on the ship down to the planet. Once they've got the advantage in numbers, it's a simple matter to hijack the ship.

All it would take is one Klingon soldier to be stationed on guard in the BoP transporter room, and Kirk and crew would be cut down before the blue sparkles disappeared.

Kirk's plan was almost exactly as it played out:

1. Get down to the planet a safe distance from the remaining Grissom landing party.
2. Ambush the unsuspecting Klingon guards who remain with the hostages
3. Use a communicator to attempt to lure Kruge into an emotional decision to beam them up and out of immediate danger
4. Figure something out once they got to the BoP (a fighting chance to live)

The only other alternative was to hand the Enterprise over to the Klingons, and hope like heck that the Excelsior or another Federation ship would show up and figure out how to save them....but putting his fate into someone else's hands is not Kirk's style, and surrendering the Enterprise would have been the worst kind of treason imaginable, particularly if it compromised the Genesis data.

The real stupid move was Kruge ordering his men to kill a hostage. These were obviously scientists who might actually know the technical details of how the project worked. They ended up killing the only person (David) who might actually help Kruge achieve his goal.

But, going to Genesis was really the only choice.
