So, now that it's clear there's a cast for Star Trek (2008) well underway with filming, what would you predict for the very likely next film in the sequence?
I'm sure it is sensible that Star Trek (2008) will end with Kirk receiving command of the Enterprise, in the "way time intended"... so where could it go from there?

My own what if:
I'd like to see them avoid the V. McIntyre Enterprise: First Adventure storylines, by perhaps starting N months after Kirk receives the Enterprise... (thus leaving the novel "unspoken") and picking up with an early TOS, pre-WNMHGB adventure. Something preparatory to WNMHGB, perhaps investigating a "quasar-like phenomenon" as seen in Galileo Seven, or a mystery story of sorts... let's say Denobula Triaxa suddenly "blinks out of existence", as does another world or two that we were introduced to during ST: Enterprise. It could be Kirk's mission to discern what's going on.
I'd like to see the end cause not being some "evil villain" but a physical, spatial phenomenon that scientist Spock, engineer Scott, and physicist Sulu manage to determine how to reverse. Young Lt j.g. Uhura might distinguish herself working for Spock on the "last messages from these worlds", and newly-posted Ensign Chekov is working in engineering aiding Scott. Their work in this would explain why Sulu, Uhura and Chekov all end up as part of the bridge crew (assigned because of the efforts they give Spock in solving the crisis.)
Kirk and Mitchell might be dealing with the aftermath of an injury in the fast-paced away-mission-gone-bad prologue, perhaps the "darts I took for you"... with the second medical officer, one Dr. McCoy, accompanying Mitchell to another base. That can establish Dr. Piper as chief med, or flip them, it wouldn't matter much. Kirk's key function could serve as "narrator" as a number of TOS episodes did with his frequent Captain's Log entries, and his internal thoughts being voiced to the audience.
Something cerebral, yet with the potential for space action sequences, a space-judo-chop prologue, and multiple ships involved in this mission, perhaps creating some sort of "net" a la what was done in TNG's Sela/DuraS episodes. Throw in a Maguffin "villain" such as some of those never-explained nasty ships from ST: Enterprise that sectioned up the NX-01 in the first season; but no Ferengi, Cardassians, or other misplaced TNG characters.
Gary Seven could of course appear, as he could wipe memories as needed.
Klingons could of course appear, as another maguffin-like menace. Have an appropriately chosen Klingon character from the TOS milieu. "This area of space has been annexed by the Klingon Empire. You are trespassing."
