Star Trek (2009) Surpasses TMP in Inflation-Adjusted Numbers!

In my original post, I was trying to be clear that I was just looking at this one particular measure -- inflation-adjusted domestic box office gross -- and nothing else. It is my understanding that, generally speaking, the domestic box office is the primary thing that studios look at to determine whether or not a film is considered a success. Why worldwide box office is not as important, I have no idea. It's all money.

But, anyway, I understand that there are a million other things that play into the financial picture of a film -- broadcast TV rights, cable TV rights, pay-per-view showings, video and DVD sales, merchandising tie-ins, profit after factoring in production costs, etc. But in just the one particular measure that I used, the current film has now surpassed the film which previously held the record -- TMP -- and I think that's just a further indication of the film's success.

I've heard studios receive less of the overseas box office than they do the domestic, but I imagine that's different from film to film.

TMP was a different era, they cant be compared except to say that both movies did well in their own times.

True, and that's why I clarified it was comparing domestic first run boxoffice revenue and profits. Obviously DVDs weren't around back in the day. But, if you want to compare with DVDs, that's not exactly a valid comparison, but be sure to include the DVD sales for TMP at least.

Over how many years?...5...10--20?

I think the point that DVD's have "replaced" months-on-end theatrical runs is a valid one...

I'd be happy to call the whole thing a 2-way tie, since it is win-win as far as I'm concerned.

That means that the new film now is the most financially successful of all the Trek movies
1. ST:TMP worldwide gross $409.5 million:p
2. Star Trek worldwide gross $361.6 million

and using this http://data.bls.gov/cgi-bin/cpicalc.pl ST:TMP domestic gross is now $242.3 million.
I'm curious how you got any sort of result out of that, given that the calculator gave me an error message saying it couldn't handle a base number larger than 10 million.

Tom's Inflation Calculator gives different answers, depending on which data set you use. If you use the U.S. Retail Price Inflation (Annual Average), you get TMP with a domestic take of $271,560,238. If you use the December-to-December index, it's $255,117,256.

Ultimately, though, all of this is really inconsequential; what's important is that the new movie is a phenomenal success, beyond most of our wildest dreams. :)

Well TMP to Nemesis is already out in Blu ray so you only have to wait till the Trek XI Blu ray/DVD release to own them all that way.
I had heard some of them were out; but if all of them are out now, I need to check if they have a total movie package.

I want all of them on blu ray.

Depending on the transfer quality... especially for the older ones.

Digital Bits said there was too much Digital Noise Reduction on all of them except TWOK, which made their faces seem like wax figures.

Honestly, I watched them all on my 52" LCD and I did not notice anything strange about how the faces looked.

That must have been sweet. As I've said before, we won't be getting a blu-ray player until good brands are normally under $200. My husband is having a little stubborn streak after adopting HD-DVD first.

(Also, we have to buy a new HD-TiVo, since this one burned out, and DirecTV isn't supporting HD-TiVo anyway, but rather their own. He's having a stubborn streak about that, too.)

Its still a little behind, but given the kid appeal of this new movie, I suspect it will pass TMP in adjusted numbers.

I think the best tool would be a motion-picture specific inflation based on ticket prices. Using Box Office Mojo's average ticket prices of $2.51 for 1979 and $7.18 for 2009 results in $235,305,065 for TMP's adjusted figure. However, I usually see TMP's adjusted figure reported between $239M and $242M.

Either way, it doesn't make much difference, as you say. What's important is that Star Trek has been a great success for the studio, on par with the best box office performances in series history. We can therefore expect more in the future. :techman:

The $235 mill figure for ticket prices seems to be the most accepted now.

According to SHowbiz Data, ST 09 has made $239.478 mill....and its the ONLY movie to have an increase, at 1%!
