Star Trek (2009) novelization (finally) announced!

Meh.

No offence to Mr Foster, but without trying to kiss ass, I could name quite a few regular posters to this board who I'd rather have seen do the novelisation of this movie. I'm sure they're all too polite to agree with me but I can't say that any of ADF's previous movie adaptations or his original novels ever did much for me.

Disappointing.

I quite liked his Star Wars adaptation (even if it did say "by George Lucas" on the cover).

Short of hiring Zombie James Blish to write it, it's hard to think of a better candidate to link old school Trek to this new incarnation. And the fact that the scriptwriters are treating him as a celebrated and admired author rather than a temp hack won't hurt matters, either.

Works for me. He's very good at filling-in plot for novelizations, and I have fond memories of what he did with the TAS adaptations.

I think it's pretty damned cool. ADF is one of the people who inspired me to do this stuff in the first place.

Interesting. There are current Trek writers could do at least as good a job, but Foster has a high profile, and a lot of history with Trek.

I was beginning to wonder whether we were getting a novelization, given the lack of earlier notice and the fact that the movie's being made by a new team. Never occurred to me to investigate whether there was a Transformers novelization. Boy, wouldn't it be nice if there were some other movie tie-in books that hadn't been announced yet, like a making-of book, or an art book. Not that I believe it's going to happen, but it sure would be a pleasant surprise.

His Star Trek Log Three was the first piece of adult fiction I ever read, back in the second grade. I learned a lot of vocabulary from him.

You know, I don't think I've ever read anything by Mr. Foster.

Weird.

Zombie James Blish is, of course, still holding out for the chance at an entirely new take on "Spock's Brain"...

I do appreciate that quite a bit...

Some filmmakers seem to barely notice their works' novelisations. :/

Great pick.

About the only writer that posts here that would have been higher on my wish list would have been Dayton Ward. No offense to any other writers that post here, because they have all written material I've enjoyed. I just feel Ward gets TOS better than anyone else.

Wow, kinda suprising. I was honestly expecting it to be KRAD or Peter David or another current Trek writers, but I guess this should work too. I'll admit I'm curious though, since the only thing by ADF I've read was his pre-Attack of the Clones SW book, which I remember nothing about. Although it does sound like he's got both the novelisation and Star Trek history to pull this off.
