star trek 2 shot in 4k

Our AMC theater, where we almost always go to the movies has begun adding a short video notice before any film shown there just before the movie starts: "Presented in SONY Digital 4K", 3D or not. WIKI
Honestly, I cannot see a difference.

The difference between 4K and 2K at the cinema would depend on several factors.

One--how far you sit from the screen.
Two--the size of the screen.
Three--the quality of the actual projector (lens, video processing capabilities, etc.).
Four--the intensity of the lamp (many are not set to optimal settings).
Five--your own visual acuity (a factor many, many people overlook when shopping for displays).

If all else is equal (size, quality, distance, visual acuity), the difference would also be most apparent in a side by side comparison. Otherwise, it would matter little, except for very large screen sizes (large by cinema standards, not by home standards).

4K is important for archival purposes, though. 8K is the best but not necessary for most films. 6K would be sufficient for 90%, though 4K is better than 2K.
