Facing the opening day of Terminator Salvation, Star Trek held decently, dropping only about 4.3%, to roughly $3 million. It's domestic total is now $161.6 million.

Terminator opened with $13.4 million, including its opening midnight showings.

How long will Star Trek stay in theaters?

Re: Star Trek - $3 M Thurday - $161 M domestic

A film can make more money by staying at number two than by being at number one.

Remember Mamma Mia, film after film replaced each other as number one, but it stayed at number two for half the year.

Re: Star Trek - $3 M Thurday - $161 M domestic

That's a rather poor opening day number for Terminator.

Yeah, it is. If it follows Indy4's Memorial Day opening ($25 million Thursday) it will make $66.5 million through Monday. But who knows what will happen. Friday's numbers will tell the story.

Yeah, it is. If it follows Indy4's Memorial Day opening ($25 million Thursday) it will make $66.5 million through Monday. If it follows POTC:AWE's Memorial Day opening ($13.2 million Thursday), it will open with $128.5 million.

But it probably won't follow either (especially POTC which people were much more excited about) and land somewhere in between. It really depends on the Friday numbers.

Pirates didn't really open on Thursday. It had "sneak previews" starting at 7pm (or maybe it was 8pm?) on Thursday, but the Friday is what was advertised as "opening day" (just like Trek).

Terminator should follow an opening weekend pattern similar to Indy, or maybe worse. I presume that it'll get beat by Night at the Museum.

Do you mean "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"? That one was never #1, but was consistently at #2 for weeks and made a lot of money.

I wonder how Trek would have fared if Paramount hadn't switched from the Christmas 2008 release date.

Yeah, you're right. My bad.

I don't think it would have hit a $70+ million opening weekend...probably more like a $40-45 million weekend. But then, if there had been enough time for the word of mouth about the film to have built in November/December the way it did in April...maybe not. Really, what competition would Trek have had at Christmas or even into January/February 09?

One thing that would be different is that we'd all probably be talking about the DVDs now instead... :)

Re: Star Trek - $3 M Thurday - $161 M domestic

Considering how bad Terminator was, I cant say im surprised it isnt getting alot of support

Re: Star Trek - $3 M Thurday - $161 M domestic

Wait--Terminator opened Thursday all day and only managed 13 million? Including its midnight showing?!?

I'm stunned.

And happy that Star Trek pulled in 3 million. Steady as she goes...

Re: Star Trek - $3 M Thurday - $161 M domestic

some of the movie theatres here have cut trek back to two showings during the day but give it four threatres for their prime time between 6 - 8pm.

Re: Star Trek - $3 M Thurday - $161 M domestic

"Paramount’s leggy scifi prequel “Star Trek” was second among Thursday top grossers, with $3 million and a $161.6 million cume. Sony’s literary-based thriller “Angels & Demons” was third, with its $2.6 million daily gross pushing domestic cume for the Tom Hanks starrer beyond $160 million."

A&D beyond 160 million???
