Star Trek 1,5,6,9,10 end credits

In the 70s, disco versions of sci-fi themes was a thing. Star Wars is the most well known one (I think there were several versions).

I used to collect this kind of thing. Perhaps my sentimental fave was a version of the Planet of the Apes theme. I told a friend about this; he said "That movie doesn't actually have a theme tune, does it?"; I played him the "theme" - which was a funky disco groove with people going "Ook ook, eek eek" over the top. It was hilarious - and funky! Other than that, my Geoff Love CD is my favourite.

If you want to see a more modern version of a Star Wars travesty:

WTF?!?!?!?

I have NEVER, in decades of being a ST fan heard lyrics for Decker and Ilia's love theme!

And APPARENTLY sung by Shaun Cassidy!

OMG - this is one of those rare moments when you ACTUALLY learn something new!!!!!

It's possible that Walter Murphy did one as well, but the disco version of the Star Wars theme that I'm familiar with, which was a #1 single, was by Meco:

My sis used to have the very record shown in the video. Think it was a 12" single.

^Ah, yes, Meco. That was it. As a kid, I had trouble distinguishing Meco from the toy company Mego, which made the classic Star Trek action figures and bridge playset.

Murphy likely sparked the trend that Meco benefited from. If a disco version of classical music piece could go #1, why not do the same with the classical-style theme of a very popular film...?

^Reminds me of when they used the theme as background lounge music in TOS Season 1....

Familarity with something can influence or opinions, what if TNG had used a different theme and hundreds of episodes and decades later because we are familiar with it how would we recat to hearing an alternative.

Speaking for myself, I first heard McCarthy's alternate theme back in '87, since it was released on the "Farpoint" soundtrack album. And I quite liked it at the time. I was never a big fan of the decision to just recycle the TMP theme. I felt a new show with a new cast and setting should have a new theme. And as I said, I'm not crazy about the way the TNG version of the TMP theme is arranged and conducted. The McCarthy alternate did always strike me as a bit bombastic, but still pretty good.

I first got introduced to it via TNG, So hearing it - and so much of it! - during TMP the first time afterwards was quite magical. I love hearing extended versions of every day TV theme tunes. YouTube's great for that - some are bonkers. It's hearing something ever so different to tunes you are over familiar with.

For some reason I assumed at the time DS9 would recycle the Horner theme!

I love the theme to Generations, but it does eat at my OCD... being the only 2 hours of TNG not to use the theme. Its on 5 movies, but not their first.

That's where I first heard it, I love things like that. The Courage theme alternative on The Voyage Home too. Wish we had the double reprisal theatrical edit of the Nemesis end titles on CD though. I know it is an edit, but that's how it ended. So close yet so far. Had to rip my own copy.

Just occurred to me to wonder something. Those of you who think the McCarthy alternate TNG theme is too cheesy or bombastic: How well do you think it would work as a Superman theme? Because I realized this morning that it could've made an excellent Superman theme. (Perhaps because its main melody is similar to the motif Louis Fevre used for Clark Kent in the later seasons of Smallville. Though also because that kind of big, brassy heroic march is the standard for Superman themes.)
