The only way to "check everything" would be to watch everything and take extensive notes.

It's the editor's job to find such errors, but who knows, maybe the editor found the "error" and ADF or JJ's team decided they wanted it to read exactly that way. Maybe it provides a hint that not everything coming out of Nero's lips is correct?

I picked up the book in the bookstore, flipped to the last page, read that scene, vomited copiously on all the copies on the shelf, flipped a coin to the bookstore owners and said: "Sorry about the mess."

Pike tells Kirk that it's a peacekeeping armada or some such, which is incorrect since he's describing Starfleet not the Federation. It seems like the Federation and Starfleet are one and the same in the new movie.

Judging from the way that line was only heard when Pike was off-camera, and from its absence in the early previews of that scene, I'm certain that it was dubbed in post-production. No doubt Abrams realized that the script hadn't adequatedly defined the Federation and its value for the benefit of newcomers, so he had to slip in a line of exposition where he could. But he had to keep it brief, so clarity suffered in the process. Not to mention credibility; since Kirk was born and raised in the Federation, of course he'd know what it is.

Don't be too sure about that. There's probably a shitload of Americans who don't know what the United Nations or the NATO are.


That line about the "peacekeeping armada", the "join the military to become a better person" message, Kirk executing Nero to satisfy revenge, etc... makes me wonder if Roddenberry is spinning in his urn right now.

I wasn't meaning to imply that Pike didn't know what they were...I just found it very frustrating that he inferred to Starfleet and the Federation as being one and the same. I realize that story wise there wasn't much time to really explore this concept in detail or show Federation headquarters. I just found it weird that Pike talked about the Federation like it was Starfleet.

Maybe in the NuUniverse the Federations is actually a Stratocracy. Maybe Starfleet does actually run everything. We know nothing about what happened between 2233 and 2258.

VM's novelisations of Treks 2-4 are wonderful and broaden out the stories of those films. Those that have followed, especially in the TNG era and now ST09, just haven't come close.

I don't know. I thought the novelizations of TUC and Generations were pretty good on expanding the story. Maybe not as heavily as the novelizations that McIntyre did, but there was still a good effort on expanding the story.

I don't care for McIntyre's novelizations. She didn't get Kirk, maybe even hated him. She constantly portrayed him as an immature jackass and used Carol and David Marcus as mouthpieces with which to berate him. Not to mention that she killed Kirk in her first Trek novel. It was pretty clear she was a Spock and McCoy fan since she treated them far kinder than she tended to treat Kirk.
