Star Fleet Battles Races

Hiya guys!

Thanks to discussions on a few threads here, I've finally been inspired to return to SFB, and was just curious as to the favourite races of other players.

Mine first and foremost is the Andromedans, simply because their tech works differently to the other races. Yet, I still have a fondness for the Klingons and Lyrans.

If you like that piece of Andro art in your av, you'll love this piece from Adam Turner!

I'm more a background-hog than a gamer - and even if I was able to play, it would more likely be Fed Commander than SFB - but background-wise, I'm a major fan of the Interstellar Concordium, the Andromedans, and pretty much everything in the Omega Octant, the Iridani Cluster, and the Lesser Magellanic Cloud!

Background-wise, I'd say Romulans, but I haven't enjoyed playing them in the game so much. My one experience playing Kzintis was a lot of fun, but their background doesn't seem all that engaging.

I prefer the Gorns, mainly because I like their straightforward plasma-chucking strategy. But after that, I like the races with more unconventional weapon technology. Mainly the Lyrans and ISC. I would count the Andros in that, but my main opponent back in the day always played Andros, so I've grown to hate them, lol. I like the Hydrans too, but only because of the hellbore. I hate fusion beams. I can't wrap my brain around being effective with them.

High speed passes to point blank range. HET when appropriate.

I always enjoyed killin with the Lyrans.. Fed's and Klingons also...

Mostly a committed Fed Player here.

I mostly played against Klingons in fleet actions. One on one duels sabre dancing and trying to prevent jockeying for the shield boundry between the #6 shield and the #1 shield was often a challenge to prevent the "Klingon Hook" if you were not fully paying attention to what your opponent was doing.

Sometimes I played Klingon. But mostly to train new players new to the game. I often emphisised pressing a agressive approach putting all your weapons out on the board and charge your opponent forcing him to choose at firing at your weapons or fire at you. Not a good time for him to dump a wild weasle since he is now chained to a slower speed and now is limited in what he can do witohut voiding the weasel.

kinda liked the tholians myself them and the romulans were the races I used a lot when i used to play

I haven't played SFB in years (though I played a lot of Starfleet Command for a while). When I did play SFB, I tended to go Fed as often as not, with Klingons being my usual second choice.

Me and an old buddy of mine used to engage in the classic Fed CA vs. Klingon D7 duel over and over again (often with assorted variants on those two classes). We got to the point we were so evenly matched that we'd go on for hours and hours at a stretch, neither one managing to gain a significant advantage against the other. What usually happened is I'd end up getting tired/desperate/sloppy after a while and he'd take advantage the first mistake I made. Sometimes I'd manage to outlast him, though, or to just plain come up with something so unexpected it'd catch him off guard.

Background-wise I always liked the ISC, but I don't think I ever played them in tabletop SFB... my patience could barely stand waiting two turns for photons; three turns for plasma was more than I could take. For the same reason, I seldom played Romulans (using the plasma effectively in conjunction with the cloak strained my patience even farther).

I also had a fondness for the Kzinti stemming from my love for Niven's Known Space stories, even though the SFB version bore little more than the name and the general nature of the species in common with Niven's Kzin. I only played them very occasionally, though.

I like mixed fleets with Federation, Kzinti, and Hydran ships. Lots of drones to occupy enemy weapons and the Hellbore to take advantage of any down shield. Also the Hydran Stingers are great for drone or plasma defense.

As far as background goes, the Jindarians are kinda cool.

My reason for liking Kzintis is much more prosaic; I enjoy spamming opponents with gobs of drones.

Andomedans were my faves. I played in a tournament that was a pick your ship free for all and my intruder went down in a hail of phasers and overloaded photons, disrupters and a couple of plasma torps. At least I outlasted the Romulan Dreadnaught. He got hit by every ship on the board in the first turn.
