Standup Comedians

Well, no. Bill Cosby is the best comedian, simply because he's the only one I can think of who can reduce an entire audience to a mess of absolute laughter for a prolonged period of time ... and do it all without telling a foul joke or cursing. Himself is, without a doubt, the greatest comedy recording in history.

Bill Hicks was a comic genius. He was ahead of his time. :( (Which is why I can't really stand Lewis Black. Black's style of comedy is all of Hicks' anger and yelling without any of the incisive, intelligent commentary.)

The comedians I like the most are the Blue Collar Comedy guys - Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvall, Ron White, Larry the Cable Guy. (Out of those, my favorite is Engvall.) I guess I prefer comedians that are conventional and relatively 'clean'. Big surprise, eh? :p

I also like George Carlin, but mostly in his early days. It's not that I hate dirty humor (I don't), I just thought he was *funnier* when he was doing Wonderful WINO, the Indian Sergeant, 400000 American Musical Favorites, stuff like that.

Bill Hicks? Never heard of him. (Well, actually I have heard *of* him, I just have never heard his routine. I have no idea what he sounds like or what kind of humor he is.)
Dane Cook? Only routine of his that I liked was "Car Alarm".

Denis Leary

"I have a scoop for you. I stole Leary's act. I camouflaged it with punchlines, and to really throw people off, I did it before he did." -- Bill Hicks

Fuck Denis Leary.

Amen. Bill Hicks is the best comedian and Leary wishes he was half as good as him.

I never bought that whole thing that Leary was ripping Hicks off. A lot of the bits Leary was supposed to have stolen were so generic they were the kind of things any comedian might think up.

I think Bill Hicks has got to be one of the most overated comedians ever. He is clever but not funny. I don't see why he is so beloved.

Anyways i'm not sure of I have a favorite. I do think I prefer comedy that makes fun of everyday situations or has a relveant point about society. In otherwords, what Bill Hicks was doing, just not doing it in away that is funny. My favorite comedians would be

1 Jerry Seinfeld
2Chris Rock
3George Carlin
4Mitch Hedberg
5Dave Chappele
6 Ron White

Jason

No love for Robin Williams? His stand up routines from the 80's and 90's always had me rolling. The guy is insane.

Some of Leary's routine is ripped from Hicks nearly word-for-word as well as the "demeanor", the use of cigarettes as a "comedic prop" (look at the way Leary holds and uses his and compare to Hicks) and just the overall "stage presence."

Hicks was a funny, funny man. That said, I really like Leary too, his harder edge -and sense of irony- works for me too.

Word, though, to the guy who said Cosby is a great comedian who can reduce people to piles of laughing goo without being ofensive or crass.

I also used to watch a lot of Tim Allen -pre Home Improvement days- and god, he was pretty damn funny too.

Take Michael McIntyre off that list right now. He doesn't deserve to be on a list with those.

But yeah, love stand up comedy, and it's actually reminded me I better get some money saved so I can go to some of the local comedy festival. Rich Hall, Stewart Francis and Mitch Benn are all ones I want to get tickets for.

Jimmy Carr
Lee Evans
Billy Connelly
Eddie Izzard
Frankie Boyle
Dara O'Briain
Andrew Maxwell
would all be on my list...
Hell after watching Live at the Apollo and Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow Patrick Kielty would be on there too.

Why, what's wrong with Michael McIntyre? Granted, he doesn't get much to do on his Roadshow thing cause he's little more than a glorified compere, but I've seen his DVD and laughed my arse off at most of it. And he was pretty funny on last Sunday's episode of Top Gear.

I was kidding, of course I can't tell you your opinion but I really don't like the smarmy get.
Though to be honest I have found him pretty funny on Roadshow, and he was ok on Apollo, but his appearances on other things, and clips of his DVD just make me dislike him.

I know some don't care for him, but I really enjoy Christopher Titus. I thought his TV series was hilarious, and a couple years ago I got the chance to see him live. It was worth every penny.

I gotta say I'm surprised I'm the only one showing love for Tosh. He's definitely a newer comedian, but I don't know if I've laughed as hard in the last 5 years as I did during his last special "Completely Serious"

"...money doesn't buy happiness. Do you live in America? Cause it buys a waverunner. You ever see a sad person on a waverunner? Seriously, have you? Just try to frown on a waverunner."

lol

Yeah, he is pretty funny. It sucks that he had to endure such a shitty home life though...I remember during Norman Rockwell Is Bleeding he got the audience to go stone cold silent when he mentioned his mother's suicide. I have never heard a comedian do that to an audience before.

I love his bit about "Anti-Dad". 'And then at about noon, or BEER O'CLOCK...' :guffaw:

A lot of No Cure for Cancer came straight from Hicks' material, specifically his Dangerous tour.
