Standing the test of time...

^^^I wonder what sort of reputation Picard would have gotten if the brand-new flagship of the Federation had been destroyed while under his command due to the actions of its intoxicated crew.

Spock was the Crusher/Data of TOS. Once the producers figured out how popular he was, Spock began solving all sorts of problems, including ones that Scotty should have.

It's often been said that TOS was ahead of its time, but considering we really haven't gotten that much smart SF on TV then we're still waiting.

Put another way I have seen very little come along since TOS that is as good or arguably better. You can't argue that f/x and post production standards have gotten more polished, but when it comes to writing, to content and overall approach and execution I think TOS still ranks among the best, missteps and all.

I wpuldn't tout Picard's command rep to much:

First ship - The U.S.S. Stargazer: Abandoned after an attack mby a Ferengi cargo ship.

The U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-D: Destroyed by the first officer (whom Picard left in command while he violated regulations and beamed down to a planet alone; and ultimately destroyed because said First officer let his girl friend drive it into a planet. ;)

Why has Star Trek stuck around while, say, "My Mother The Car" is lost to the trivia books?

Pretty much all of the above reasons listed, plus Star Trek's ability to become a part of American mythology. Terms like "warp speed" and "beam me up" are a part of the lexicon, used by people who probably haven't seen a millisecond of any of the shows.

It's now on a level like Superman, Batman, and Mickey Mouse. A part of the culture, and able to survive bad tv ("Threshold", "Spock's Brain", "These Are The Voyages...") and bad movies (ST V, Nemesis, JJTrek), because it's become a part of the culture.

Standing the test of time means...that a technically sophisticated show like TOS is still deemed popular and worthy enough to spend money and time on for a remastering!

And what about the Chief Engineer, who forgot about the core ejection system. Or they could have set the auto pilot to warp the star drive section away. Even a second at warp 1 would have gotten it to a safe distance away from the saucer section.

I'm convinced that they could've transplanted the characters with a random sampling of fans from the audience and the ship would've been saved.
