ST3 = epic Federation v Klingon war?

War with the Klingons? Not really interested.

Damn right.

If this is Star Trek then you can't have a backdrop of a nasty ongoing war, it might have worked in serialised TV on DS9, but wont with a movie universe.

We need a proper sci-fi story with a moral and the same fun humour and action of the first two. Then we will have a properly good Trek film.

Making the best ever Trek film is still perfectly possible, Abrams will not better Empire Strikes Back, I guarantee it, but Wrath of Khan is up for grabs!

The premise isn't as important as the execution. You can have a movie that is properly Sci Fi, still true to Trek, AND completely original. All of these things made the 2009 one good. The war plot doesn't need to be explained in great detail, and the plot can just use it as a springboard. Remember when TNG introduced the Cardassians? They didn't waste any time; they just jumped right into it, gave minor exposition, and let you watch the results of border disputes. Into Darkness already established that war with the Klingons was very likely, and various episodes made it clear that they had fought an open war at some point. I think they can make an "epic Federation vs Klingon war" fit into the movie without having to do it in the same style as DS9.

Well to an extent anyway. I probably wouldn't have had any problems with Into Darkness if it didn't recycle an old plot. Kirk's character was tolerable but I don't think this was the plot to grow him up.

Not wars.

I'd rather see a story about "exploring strange new worlds".

TOS had many interesting stories, involving conflicts and problems and a compelling story with human themes and values consistent with Gene Roddenberry's optimistic vision.

It is what I want to see.

Sounds good. :)

Although I too would like to see an exploration based third film (as long as it doesn't bore me to tears), I would not be averse to an epic war movie between Feds and Klingons for the third Trek.

That said, I agree that the third movie should be focused on StarFleet's primary mission of exploration and contact, given Kirk's optimistic speech at the end of STID.

Possible.

Would be good to see a Star Trek rendition of Jutland and leading up to it. A vast and costly fleet battle that's indecisive and ultimately crippling for both the Federation and the Klingon Empire, culminating in a cease fire and neutral zone type deal due to the devastation wrought.

We know the Klingon Empire isn't entirely a do or die type of culture, even though they like to think they are. The Federation will want peace no matter (as long as they get to keep what they have and allow people to join them if they want to).

Eh, Trek can and has been so many things over the decades, "not real Star Trek" holds no weight with me at all. Ridiculous as it sounds now, back in the 80's there were fans who refused to accept the animated series or classic movies as true extensions of TOS. How many different incarnations of Trek have we seen since then? How many war stories?
For that i would not blame them. Is that even canon?

On the other hand if they are working Shatner into the film isn't it possible/likely that the film involves time travel of some kind? My money says they attempt to return Spock Prime to his own universe

I agree that a Klingon war would be a great idea + a natural for the 50th Anniversary

How would that open a role for Shatner? By 2387 in the prime timeline, Kirk has been dead for fifteen or sixteen years.

A story about "exploring strange new worlds". It is something that has been sorely lacking in the feature film franchise since 1982.

War with the Klingons? Not really interested.

Co-sign.

Easy: no decomposition of any kind occurs on Veridian III. Pfft. A real fan would know this. ;)

How about this?: Nero wasn't completely dumb and he sent the ROMULANS a complete copy of every bit of information he gained access to - including future historical and technical data as well as what his ship's sensors easily hacked out of Federation and Klingon ships' computers from this far in the past. So now the Romulans have future tech ships and are whipping the weakened Klingons' butts. So Starfleet has to come to their rescue!

Epic space battles, Klingons, Romulans, and maybe even a very Trek-like message about the unintended consequences of trying to arm people who just aren't ready for it in order to ensure their freedom, without really knowing what they'll do with what you've given them, or how it can really end up destroying what you were trying to preserve. (:cough: Iraq :cough:)

I'd watch a Klingon War flick, but it would have to be done right. No more than 15 minutes of battle in which several Federation and Klingon ships meet their ends then every ship goes dark apart from a large glowing head on every view screen: The Organians. Leave out the corny fist fight in the Californian desert, and the Gorn, but keep the Organian trial. Do it with more than just Kirk and a Klingon though, try a few Federation and Klingon captains that have to work together or both EMPIRES cease to exist. OOh, the moment the captains are brought together, they're shown the Federation and Klingon Empire don't exist and they must make peace before everything is put back.

really hope there is a TOS/Trek III style climactic fist fight between ripped shirt Kirk-Fu and a Klingon villain on some inhospitable planet - maybe one that's about to go boom...after all the space ship battling it comes down to just 2 men

Yes. The Klingon's had their day in the prime-line. All the while the Romulan's were reduced to only ever giving lip-service to their hopes of towing the ENTERPRISE back to Romulus and setting its broken hull on display in the Capital. I say it's time they make good on all those empty threats.

I'd say there's a great chance that aggressive Klingons will be central to the third film.

To me, the Romulans were always the more interesting foe. I think they were criminally under-used in TOS and over-simplified in TNG.

aggressive Klingons

Is there any other kind ?

Gotta say, I'm all for an epic Federation vs Klingon battle / conflict - nothing beats a good ole-fashioned fleet battle in deep space!

:techman:

Pew-pew, and all of that...

EDIT: More specifically, I'm hankering for seeing more starship classes (both Fed. and Klingon) - what can I say: I love me Trek ships!!!
