ST VI sign-off

Just watched the last scenes of ST VI, it was my brother's favorite and the sign-off at the end, with the music soaring is just great.

I remember reading somewhere Nimoy (I think) stated that they were supposed to sign-off as the characters, not the actors originally. Somwhere along the way the concept changed to what we have now, which is I think the right choice. Anyone remember hearing or reading this too??

It would have been very odd to see Nimoy's handwritting for example writing 'Spock' across the screen.

When Star Trek: Nemesis was released I wondered if they were going to redo this with the TNG cast signatures. I was kinda disappointed when they didn't, would have been a nice touch.

^ I agree, it's perfect. I don't think it was AS clear at the time of Nemesis that it would be their last Trek on the big screen. It was a while after that film that Paramount wiped the slate clean, cancelling Enterprise and letting go every person who worked on Trek for the past 20 years.

The TOS group was VERY lucky to make ST VI, the 25th anniversary helped, and Nimoy and the production staff insisting they could make it for a reasonable amount of money after the flop that ST V had been.

I will forever be grateful for VI, the place it has in my relationship with my late brother, and the chance they had to go out with some class.

It was a really cool ending, it could have made it better with a montage of each character throughout the years, ending with their TUC appearance and their signature across the screen

^ I always think of the teaser trailer as that. It's the first and only time classic Trek was shown in theaters in connection to the film franchise. That teaser trailer is just as classic, narrated by Christopher Plummer.

I would really like to know if I'm remembering correctly about the sign-off, it's really buggin' me

I'm not embarrassed to say the TUC sign-off actually brought a tear to my eye on first viewing.

22stars - Yes, initially it was to be the characters signing off per se, rather than the actors that is until either Nimoy or possibly Meyer felt it was more appropriate for the actors, as it was akin to a final bow before the curtain is dropped.

Quite an emotional farewell to the beloved TOS ensemble cast. Cliff Eidelman's Sign Off track is one that often elicits emotions of bravado, finality, and of a sense of a mission accomplished. However, I do ponder how Jerry Goldsmith would have scored this pivotal moment.

I have an early draft of the script (that still calls the character Saavik and not Valeris), but I don't think that the sign off is included at the end.

I loved how that movie ended with the actors signing off. It was very appropriate and a nice "thank you" to the audience. I like the idea above that it would have been even cooler if they had shown a montage of each of the actors as their characters through the years.

It would be nice, but it'll never happen. That ship has long since sailed, and although it's sad, we all need to accept it.

The end of ST:VI from when Uhura says the ship's been ordered to report back to spacedock to be decommissioned right through to the end of the signatures, still gets me every time. Shatner's VO is perfect as the Enterprise flies off in to the light created by that second star to the right. And seeing DeForest and Jimmy D in that final wide angled Bridge crew shot now that they've long since left us. . well. .it's just pefect.

I've been a Trek fan long enough never to say never. While Picard and crew don't hold the same place in the public's hearts as Kirk/Spock do, I could see someone wanting to do something other than a comic book with the TNG cast, at least some of them. I think it would be smart for CBS to tap them for an animated show, to get kids watching Trek on TV after school.

The only one that truely signed off was Deforest Kelly (sadly because of his passing). Shatner, Koenig and Doohan were in the next movie, Nimoy was in the most recent one and Nichols and Takei were in STOGAM & Phase2 (yes I know those 2 are not canon but it was another filmed outing for there characters). Actually, of the main crew, Koenig has appeared as Chekov the most, post TUC, with Generations, STOGAM and Phase2.
