STARFLEET HEADQUARTERS

Captain Kirk was insistent.

“Admiral, you want me behind a desk? Fine. But I demand commands of major ships for every last member of my senior staff.”

Admiral Nogura relented when Kirk and all his people threatened to resign from Starfleet. Now, each of them was set to move up in the ranks and become major powers within Starfleet and the Federation.

In Spock’s body, the elder being Hanock could not wait to access Vulcan’s most ancient and secret mental disciplines. While Sargon and Thalassa wailed in oblivion, he would go forward to rule an empire.

In Scotty’s body, a monster that claimed to be older than time fought not to salivate at all the pretty, pretty, oh-so-easily scared women that packed the halls of Starfleet Command.

Sulu was exactly who he seemed to be, and looked forward to having his own crew, his own command, and leading them one and all to becoming part of the Body Of Landru.

Chekov was also exactly who he seemed to be, and with the aid of the being who had fled into him when Kirk and Kang laughed it out of power, Pavel Chekov would start a war with the Klingons to avenge a brother he didn’t have.

Captain Uhura was absolutely in her glory. Despite the century she lived in, she never dreamed a woman could make it to the center seat, either in the Federation, or in her native universe where the Terran Empire held sway. She sometimes wondered how long the other Uhura lasted, after they failed to be exchanged.

Doctor McCoy said little of late, though some noticed how many salty foods he always ate. Pretzels, chips, deli meat—he seemed like he just could not get enough salt. In command of his own medical frigate—he would soon have all---she could eat.

“Well, Captain Kirk—I guess you got your way in this.”

Garth of Izar was finding maintaining his borrowed form less of an effort every single day. Once the others caused untold chaos in their postings, he would step forward and unite a galaxy under his lordly banner. His rule would be a just but firm one—for those that obeyed.

“I prefer to think of it as being for the good of the Federation, Admiral.”

VULCAN, OCTOBER 31ST, 2278

“You had another nightmare.”

Sitting outside of Sarek’s home, the recently-rescued Peter Kirk nodded at Saavik.

“The worst one yet. They’d all been replaced by evil impostors.”

“Peter, do not worry. Uncle Jim and the others will come for you, as promised. They are our heroes. They will keep their word.”

But she knew the now-silent boy had spent the past ten years as a prisoner of corrupt officers who posed as heroes, and could not fault him for being scared by the changes in the crew, changes that a decade away made a dead certainty. While the reality would be a comfort and changes easily adjusted to when they came, Saavik knew the fear of wolves in sheepdog’s clothing was not one she could talk Peter out of. For it was one she shared as well.

The two young people, friends but still figuring each other out on many levels, decided to stay up past midnight, when Halloween gave way to All Saints Day.

(Note : This story is part of The Ancient Destroyer Cycle—but saying so in the summary would have spoiled the ending)
