It's difficult to imagine Hawke and Cusack now, but look at Dead Poets Society and Say Anything... and it's almost possible.

I don't think Hawke and Cusack were officially cast in the movie. The impression I get is that that was Bennett's wish list for casting.

He was more definitive than that when he spoke about the film at Farpoint a few years ago.
