I laughed my ass off when that song came out because I was surrounded by them at the time. Moon's impression really wasn't much of an exaggeration.

No, it wasn't, sadly. I lived in Montreal and Toronto when that song was popular, so nowhere near the valleys, but I still had classmates who insisted on talking like that. My guess is that they weren't familiar with the phrase "taking the piss".
