Spot the Trapezoids in TOS

My 10 year old who started this thread is a very happy Trekkie.

Check out the chronometer on the astrogator. And another pedestal - the one that supports the helm/nav console. It was right there in front of us the whole time.

Isn't this more fun than insulting people over their STXI opinions?

And who do you suppose we have to thank for the trapezoids? Is that the art director's doing?

Be well!

I guess the idea was to be futuristic by getting away from conventional rectangular shapes. Also, with the budget and materials available, it would've been harder to build anything curved.

Yeah Matt Jefferies was in love with trapezoids. They show up in a majority of his Trek stuff. Whenever I'm pencilling up some TOS type stuff, I try to slip in a trapezoid somewhere!

There's a recently build overhead skytram here in Portland (runs from the V.A. hospital, over I-5, and down to South Waterfront, for those of you in the area) that has a central support pylon that is built out of angular shapes that just screamed "Matt Jefferies!" at me. Of course, he had nothing to do with it, but it made me smile nonetheless.

^No such implication was intended. "The Empath" is a personal favorite of mine.

I used to HATE "Empath" as a kid in the 70s insyndication. It seemed like good ol' channel 50 (Detroit) ran it every week.

Now I like if for its a. different-ness; and b. theme of self-sacrifice.

Trapezoids are Feng Shui in nature. They help direct energy flow. Properties similar to the Pyramid.

;)

^The trapezoidal panel in Mirror Kirk's quarters wasn't part of the Tantalus Device, it was just the wall hanging that concealed the device, like a painting concealing a safe. Those hangings show up in a lot of quarters, so they're easily overlooked. (And in fact, the Tantalus Device itself, underneath the raised trapezoidal panel, is seen in the wall of McCoy's lab in a later episode -- "Journey to Babel," I think. It's presumably meant to represent a different piece of equipment, though.)
