Sports in the 24th Century

With the Olympics approaching. I was wondering how would sports be conducted in the 24th century? Would there be an Olympics? The sports mentioned have been Parisees Squares, Soccer, Gymnastics(Dax), Klingon Batleth tourneys. and a resurrection of Baseball on Cestus 3.

Competition would seem to be unequal between Humans and other species. The subjective sports like gymnastics and figure skating would be impossible to score due to varying tastes. The politics would still be there, Physical differences would play a part. I don't think humans would be able to match Vulcans or Klingons in a quantitative sport.

So what would be you take on this?

my fan-fic features a Federation-wide football (soccer to you colonials) league as well as leagues on several planets. The Triexians were banned because of their three legs, the Ferengi have competed in the Olympics-esque 'Galactic Cup' but have been given strict instructions not to try to bribe the opposition or the ref - something that's already happened to the Orions...

The Galactic Cup is a competition for bothe UFP members and non-UFP planets to enter. The Roms, Klingons, Ferengi, Bajorans, Cardassians and Halkans have all entered at various times...

In the "Final Reflection" the Pan Federation Games are mentioned. The Klingons have the Year Games in that book s well. Speaking of Soccer/Football, a World Cup of Soccer is mentioned in DS9.

I can't help thinking that the problems plaguing Olympic Sports and Sports in general might be magnified 1000 fold. Not only would you have judge bribing and biased judging but all sorts of mischief. Of course an unexpected victory ala the USA VS. USSR hockey match, would be all the sweeter. There are other beings that are physically superior to Humans.

I know of course Humans would be above all that in the 24th and a half century.:rommie:

i wouldn't be at all surprised if the Vulcans used to play something similar (using an inflated Sehlat bladder) pre-Surak -or the Klingons with an inflated Targ's bladder...

the IKS Gorkon novel "A Good Day to Die" mentions the ubiquity of the 'capture the flag' concept, Klingons and Tellarites both know of it, with the Tellarite version called 'Defend the Trough'...

I'm hoping a sport like figure skating would still exist. Some of the judging problems would be removed by quantitative computer analysis of the technical elements. There would have to be sentient analysis for the artistic part. That would be interesting. A Klingon or Romulan judge wouldn't have much use for music from Earth and vice versa. The Vulcans would clean up in the technical aspects but lack in the artistic area.

Of course we know sports can change radically in the course of a few hundred years. Spharistke(sp?) or tennis was a favorite of King Henry VIII. It was even considered a dangerous sport along with jousting. Bluff Hal would not know what to make of his favorite past time in the Wimbledon era.

This brings me to my next point. It seems that the Vulcans could pretty much smoke the Milky Way in any sport due to physical prowess, consistency, and mental toughness. The only hope the rest of the galaxy has is a lack of interest on the part of the Vulcans in sports.

Would there be a role for noncompetitive sports in the future?

We know Worf takes winning in Parrises' Squares way too seriously, but the human players also want to win. We know Sisko wrestled to win. We know Picard ran to win. But one could have stuff like figure skating defined so that winning is irrelevant. And it's not as if the actual outcome of the Niners/Logicians game mattered much to either side.

The Vulcans would clean up in the technical aspects but lack in the artistic area.

Unless the judge was Vulcan, too. Then, it would be the humans who lacked all artistic merit. :vulcan:

And of course water polo was around in the 22nd century... and various university teams were still in existence.
