Sports and September 11th 2001

One of the things I think about when it comes to remembering 9/11/2001 was how Sports served as a diversion for Americans at that time. The one thing that comes to mind the most was Baseball, how they came back a week later, the emotions the players and the fans all felt, the epic World Series that still continues to be one of my favorite world series ever. About a year ago, I watched the beautiful documentary "Nine Innings from Gound Zero" (Which is on MLB Network and HBO this weekend) which is a recollection of the events in the Baseball world, but the thing I remember that time for when it came to Baseball was this, Jack Buck in St. Louis reading a poem that Monday after the Attacks. I wanted to post it here, and ask, to all of you, how did Sports help or hinder you during this time of strife.

I was at the Rams/Niners game at Candlestick on 9/23/01. I suppose there was a strange sense of normalcy to it, even as the game itself seemed secondary. I don't know if that makes sense or not.

Being together in that place felt like some sort of small victory.

Yeah, I remember the first baseball game in New York after 9/11. Definitely great. A good cathartic experience and return to normal.

Well with 9/11 the terrorists weren't going for just the physical destruction or how many lives they could take, they were also trying to basicaly shut the US and our government down. So what the American people did was SHOW those basterds that we DIDN'T shut down.

They also wanted us to live in that sort of fear that they put their own people in. Sure alot of people got some sort of mental imbalances or civilian PTSD, but the whole country wasn't going to scurry away. I was 10 years old at the time, however i don't remember that day like most people do because i got spinal minengitous (i can't spell it) and basicaly bruised a part of my brain in November of that year. But in the years following I saw alot of documenteries and everyone around me have been talking about it constantly for the past 10 years.

Also, with us Americans, when we're being damned by someone and getting a beat down. We don't just sit there and take it and start crying in fear, no we get pissed off and start throwing some punches to get who ever is bringing us down to back the fuck off. Trust me, i'm no "proud to be an american, red white and blue, god bless america" type of person, but its true.

I was interviewing for a sales job on Sep 11 and wound up talking with some ESPN employees who were stranded in Denver after the Broncos Giants game, because their flights to NYC were canceled.
