Sports and Concerts in 3-D at cinema (not TV)

I think one-night or limited-engagements are going to be the new pay-per-view.
From concerts (in 2-D or 3-D) to sports games (in 3-D) people will pay for it.

the Men’s Final Four Semi-Finals & Championship basketball games in about 50 movie theaters around the country and this is from CBS Sports and Cinedigm Digital Theaters.
http://www.cinedigm.com/sports3d/index.html

and here's a report from the basketball games in 3-D.
Cinedigm’s live Final Four semi-final basketball games, which looked much better than last year’s NBA All-Star event.
By far the best shots were from the camera facing down through the hoop from directly above the backboard, backboard camera catching a 3-pointer coming straight at the camera, the shots directly behind the heads of the crowd, and the close-ups of the band and mascots —
Finally, the $19 admission price for the Final Four games and the $22 fee for Monday’s championship is just too steep. The only other person in my theater for the first game Saturday was one old, very heavy guy with a walker who slept through much of the broadcast. Even with the better marquee attraction of Duke, only about eight tickets were sold for the second game.
April 5 update: That number grew slightly when I went back to championship game on Monday but still less than 30 people in the entire theater

It is a collective experience. I think I'd like to see a musical concert in 3-D.
Here is another website for upcoming cinmea events (not in 3-D yet though I have a feeling they may try Opera in 3-D this year)http://www.fathomevents.com/Upcoming/

ESPN is launching the first all 3D sports TV network, ESPN 3D for at-home and in sports bar viewing this Spring. Even the X-Games this Summer will be in 3-D.
I'd like to see some of the Summer X-Games edited, not live in 3-D at a digital cinema. Why edited? the X-Games events have a lot of downtime and are unlike a 3 hour football game. Of course by edited I don't mean with an on-screen sports host always, just the sport itself edited to remove the wait time before each timed competition or run.
Hell for that matter I'd like to see the Winter X-Games in 3-D too as to not have to freeze your butt off watching this stuff.

Would you guys pay for a sports event or a live music concert (not prerecorded) in 3-D at the cinema for $10? $15? $20.

I think they would get more butts in seats if they charged $9-10. for sports events and $15. for music concerts rather than the more expensive $19 & $22 prices for the Final Four semi-final basketball games.
Do you think we'll have some of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games (London) or 2016 Summer Olympics (in Rio de Janeiro) in 3-D at digital cinemas for a reduced ticket admission?

I saw the Garth Brooks and Kenny Chesney cinema concerts, and both were somewhat disappointing. The experience is much closer to watching a DVD than attending a concert, so even a $10 price tag is too high for me to justify for the future.

If I wanted to see sports in 3-D I'd go to a game. I'm not really interested in baseball or basketball or football or whatever as an theatrical experience, nor as 3-D television. I want to check the score, watch for an inning or two, and go back to what I was doing.

July 10 - 1st 3-D telecast of ML Baseball game

it will air the 2010 All-Star Game in 3D, in partnership with Fox Sports
the first-ever Major League Baseball telecasts in 3D on Saturday, July 10 and Sunday, July 11 when the New York Yankees take on the Seattle Mariners at Safeco Field in Seattle.
Panasonic will be coordinating public viewing events of the games

The two games will be produced separately from YES' normal HD coverage, with 3D camera rigs from 3D specialist PACE and NEP Broadcasting's SS3D truck. That is the same technical set-up that supported ESPN's 3D production of The Masters golf tournament last month, which was carried on a special channel by Comcast and several other cable operators and also made available as a live Internet stream to 3D-capable laptops and PCs.

"There are some interesting shots from the center-field camera, looking at the runner on second base," he said. "You actually feel you're in the stadium looking at that shot."

The public viewing event I'm going to guess will be like the Mens NCAA Final Four Basketball games in April.

Which sport will be better to view on a large screen in 3-D ? [because it just looks better in 3-D on a massive screen]

the X-Games events have a lot of downtime and are unlike a 3 hour football game.
A 3hours football game? An Australian Rules match runs 4 x 20 minute quarters. Go the Mighty Magpies!! I'd rather go to a real match (either at the SCG, SFS or the MCG) than watch a 3D broadcast anyway.

I know this year's Rugby League State of Origin are planned to be available in 3D. Not sure if cinemas would be showing them. Would be fun to watch it in a Cinema, but depends on the price. 3D movies here are generally between 20 and 25 dollars, so I'll probably just watch it at home.

2010 FIFA World Cup starts in June
ESPN 3D will feature up to 25 matches throughout the World Cup.
-X Games 16, July 28-Aug. 1
-College basketball's Old Spice Classic, Nov. 25-28
-College football's ACC Championship on Dec. 4
-Jimmy V Classic on Dec. 7
-2011 BCS National Championship game Jan. 10, 2011
-X Games 15, Jan. 27-30, 2011
-College basketball's Big East Tournament, March 8-12, 2011
Whoo hoo Winter X Games in 3-D!

Comcast has agreed to carry ESPN's new stereoscopic 3D channel, ESPN 3D, keeping pace with satellite operator DirecTV, which agreed to carry the service
[Disney/ABC] ESPN will be airing this stuff on TV but what about special screenings at cinema? We'll see if they do some games starting this Summer if there is money as people can pay $15. instead of buying a 3-D HDTV.

also of note:
Enables Live 3D Showings of Sports and Social Events
alternative content such as CineLive® 3-D and 2-D sports and concerts, thematic programming and independent movies
Cinema by Satellite: Cinedigm to Double Network of Satellite-Enabled Theaters by End of 2010
Apr 29, 2010

I can also see this happending in Europe and taking off although I think it will depend on which cinemas offer beer at the concession stand...
