I think one-night or limited-engagements are going to be the new pay-per-view.
From concerts (in 2-D or 3-D) to sports games (in 3-D) people will pay for it.
the Men’s Final Four Semi-Finals & Championship basketball games in about 50 movie theaters around the country and this is from CBS Sports and Cinedigm Digital Theaters.

and here's a report from the basketball games in 3-D.
Cinedigm’s live Final Four semi-final basketball games, which looked much better than last year’s NBA All-Star event.
By far the best shots were from the camera facing down through the hoop from directly above the backboard, backboard camera catching a 3-pointer coming straight at the camera, the shots directly behind the heads of the crowd, and the close-ups of the band and mascots —
Finally, the $19 admission price for the Final Four games and the $22 fee for Monday’s championship is just too steep. The only other person in my theater for the first game Saturday was one old, very heavy guy with a walker who slept through much of the broadcast. Even with the better marquee attraction of Duke, only about eight tickets were sold for the second game.

It is a collective experience. I think I'd like to see a musical concert in 3-D.
Here is another website for upcoming cinmea events (not in 3-D yet though I have a feeling they may try Opera in 3-D this year)http://www.fathomevents.com/Upcoming/
I'd like to see some of the Summer X-Games edited, not live in 3-D at a digital cinema. Why edited? the X-Games events have a lot of downtime and are unlike a 3 hour football game. Of course by edited I don't mean with an on-screen sports host always, just the sport itself edited to remove the wait time before each timed competition or run.ESPN is launching the first all 3D sports TV network, ESPN 3D for at-home and in sports bar viewing this Spring. Even the X-Games this Summer will be in 3-D.
Hell for that matter I'd like to see the Winter X-Games in 3-D too as to not have to freeze your butt off watching this stuff.
Would you guys pay for a sports event or a live music concert (not prerecorded) in 3-D at the cinema for $10? $15? $20.
I think they would get more butts in seats if they charged $9-10. for sports events and $15. for music concerts rather than the more expensive $19 & $22 prices for the Final Four semi-final basketball games.
Do you think we'll have some of the 2012 Summer Olympic Games (London) or 2016 Summer Olympics (in Rio de Janeiro) in 3-D at digital cinemas for a reduced ticket admission?
