Spoilers Spoilers for Picard: So it seems...

...that the Kzinti are a canon species in the Star Trek Universe, based on Riker's comment in "Nepenthe"...

I found the mention intriguing, as Star Trek Online had to use the term "Ferasans" because of legal restrictions on the Kzinti... I'd assumed that was due to the Niven Known Space origin of the species, so why didn't it apply here? Is the name usable as long as they aren't shown as humanoid cats?

Or then it's affordable to send Niven's folks a suitable sum for this little indulgence. i mean, PIC is already going crazy with references, and having to pay the originators something (e.g. the character of Maddox); Chabon might have tapped into that budget for the sheer heck of it. It's not as if any of this would be "money wasted" or "money well spent" or anything...

I thought somethng was up with the rights when Modiphus' s Gamma Quadrant RPG sourcebook mentioned the Kzin as a Dominion ally in the war, so the Treaty of Sirius may well be done no way the rat-cats would willingly crawl back into their box, had legal objected to the name drop in"Nepenthe", it would have been easy enough to switch Kzinti for Nausicaans , this just means Worf can get his ass kicked by Spot's much bigger cousins

Sadly I cannot see Picard because of restrictions of cash! :wah: But aren't we on the TOS page?

The Kzinti were already a canon species, per TAS’s “The Slaver Weapon.” And they were going to make a comeback in the fifth season of ENT before the show got cancelled.

As for getting permission from Niven, I’m not sure that would be necessary if they were just name-dropping them but not showing them.
