Spoiler me this, batman

Triskelion

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
Some people (like me) may prefer to see the film with no prior knowledge whatsoever. Make judgments, or yea, enjoy the film purely on the director's intended effect. Others would like to know as much as possible prior to actually seeing it.

Which camp do you fall into?

PS
I would humbly request that people put actual film details in the posts, and not the titles.... As more details of the film surface, I'd hate to stumble across the thread "Spock is his own grandpa" or whatever.

That's a good idea in theory, but will probably be difficult to enforce.

Since no one's seen the movie at this point (and likely won't for another year), all we have are spoilers. And speculation. And speculation based on the spoilers. And fear.

I'd prefer to know as much as possible. Going to a movie is an expensive outing!

I am preplexed how one is supposed to enjoy a film based only on the director's intended effect... I mean, just because someone has good intentions, it doesn't mean it will be good.

Those who don't want to know anything, have to option of avoiding the information. But those who do want to know, may have limited options. I know it's a business that needs to suck in as many people as possible, but if it's good, then knowing before hand will only help. If it sucks, then obviously having that information out will harm the out-come to some extent.

While the appearance of spoiler-y material in thread titles has happened on occasion, it has long been board policy to avoid this, for courtesy's sake. I don't see that changing any time soon.

Personally, I don't mind learning the odd fact about an upcoming movie, in most cases -- not that I wouldn't prefer most of it to be a surprise -- but I also know how to avoid them if I don't want to know. Those who frequent a bulletin board forum where an upcoming movie is being discussed are taking a chance that they may be spoiled, even accidentally, and really shouldn't complain too loudly if it happens.

I'm kind of an odd one. I hate being spoiled and finding everything out early, but if something says "SPOILER---- DO NOT ENTER!!!!!!!" in the title, then I can't really help myself. Spoilers to me are like those bug zapping lights to... well, bugs- I see everyone else getting zapped, and I know I shouldn't go check it out, but the light/ spoiler is just so damned good.

Put it this way, I don't mind knowing about A, B and C, but I don't want to know about D, E or F. Or Z for the that matter. Certainly not Z.

I'd quite like to find the out the broad strokes, but I don't want the details.

I went into TMP having just read the novelization - and i was glad I did it that way; the book enhances the film.

I went into ST II with minimal knowledge - a few pics, the Spock death fan furore, and expectations of seeing Khan again. A great movie to have minimal knowledge.

ST III - I tried spoilering myself silly, but the movie was delayed Down Under by several months, and I devoured the air-freighted novelization ASAP. The fun was in discovering the spoilers before my friends.

ST IV - we thought we knew everything, but we had several events in the wrong order. So the movie had many surprises. (I got to see the unfinished "work print" a few weeks before the premiere!)

With ST V, I knew quite a bit, hoped I was wrong, and it was all true. Ick!

ST VI - I was avoiding too much knowledge about this movie, esp. by not reading all the magazine articles too early - but I accidentally spoilered myself by reading a photo caption about Valeris a few days before the movie came out. Drat! And damn you "Cinefantastique"!

The rest have been totally spoilerised all over the Internet, impossible to avoid info. I'm really enjoying the lack of detail on ST XI.

I just want to pick up the usual tidbits and maybe a few spoilers here and there. In this particular case I don't want to have an idea of how the script is going to go from start to finish. I rarely go to movies anymore and I'm looking forward to sitting back and just enjoying this one w/o knowing too much.

I agree with the OP, Triskelion... I just don't want to know too much about a film. We all have some idea of the premise of STXI. How Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty met. That is enough for me at the moment. I am excited about this movie, so I really don't want that to be spoiled.

It depends on the movie for me. Sometimes I like to read a spoiler if I'm not that crazy about seeing the movie or not.

So what's up with Spock being his own grandpa.

Just thought I'd throw a spoiler into this thread.

I can't believe we're going to learn that Uhura was really Q all along.

That explains a few things, like the haunting siren-like attraction of the fan-dancing.

But who knew that Wesley Crusher would time travel to help Kirk pass his particle physics exam? And in return Kirk would help him lose his virginity?
