Spock saying "Jim"

RoJoHen

Awesome
Admiral
I know it's a tiny little thing, but did it bug anyone else when Young Spock called Kirk "Jim" onboard the Jellyfish?

Nope, kind of liked it actually. Showed his human side more than anything else.

Not really. It seemed to show that their friendship was well on its way.

I too thought it came a little early.

maybe, the last time in the movie that Spock addresses Kirk he shouldve called him Jim.

Kind of like the TOS theme coming in at the end, its a nice little bit to see that the friendship is finally there, so threfore he finally calls him Jim.

But they started that off from the get go.

yeah, but unfortunately these writers can't lay it out like in a novel where over the course of a 100 pages spock and kirk become good enough friends for Spock to say "Jim".

It has to come sooner. I guess he could have said it at the end of the movie. But I liked the moment, because right after that, Kirk in an equally friendly but firm way tells Spock that the plan will work...

I also agree, it felt a little too early for Spock to be calling him "Jim". It's clear by the end that there is a friendship forming between the two of them, but I really don't think they were at that casual a point in their relationship yet.

see, they should.

they need sit down and think this franchise through. because, heaven help me, if they come out in ten years and tell me the BS Chris Carter did, I'm gonna blow their asses out an airlock.

I want them to think things through NOW, not later.

for instance, I liked that scene where Kirk hit Spock playfully in the arm, telling him "see, we are getting to know one another". Prime Jim would never have done so. he'd have known you don't touch a Vulcan casually, at least, not Spock.

but not this Jim Kirk. and, at some point in this franchise, he needs to learn that.

I want these writers to sit and think this through. I love this movie but I know it has flaws. I can live with them for now. I am not going to be so forgiving next time.

Bingo - this is what Star Trek is now, and for the immediate future - movies around the two hour mark. They don't have time to lay out years and years of friendship leading up to moments like this - in 'movie land', things happen faster than on TV or in books. Friendships, relationships, they have to evolve faster, become meaningful to the characters quicker. Otherwise, you're 5 movies in and still the characters don't even know each other's first names yet.

I think I just wanted a "Call me Jim" line from Kirk after Spock insists on addressing him by his rank. I mean, I'm hardly worried about it, but this would have been a little nod that I would have liked to see. From then on, if Spock calls him "Jim," it would be fine.

That fact it was "Jim" sounded odd to me because I wasn't sure where Spock would have known to call him Jim. I would have been happier with James.
