Spock promotes Magnavision

Loved that video, I like to imagine it just showed Nimoy on a normal day at home, conversing with his squeaking space rock about the technological innovations of the day ("Really? Arcade video games in my own home, you say? And I control it all with this handheld joystick? Fascinating!"). And then Bill Shatner comes over to show him his new Commodore VIC-20.

One thing that I miss with those old Blu-ray players that some early DVD players had was the upper door opening. I have had a number of DVD players die because the retractable door does not want to open or close after a while.

You mean, a toploader?

You go back to the 1970s, and the first VCRs were toploaders. Early JVC U-Matic VCRs even had a lever, rather than a button, to eject the cassette; the elevator, rather than being powered by a spring or a motor, was directly driven by the lever.

Early analog laser disc players (such as the one Nimoy was pitching) were toploaders.

These days, only portables are toploaders. And not all of them, either.

For that matter, prior to the IBM Merlin (last unsealed-pack) and Winchester (first sealed-pack) drives, removable-pack mainframe hard disk drives were all toploaders. And the Merlin was only a frontloader in the sense that the entire drive rolled out of the rack on power-driven drawer tracks.
